The good news is, we have recently managed to source very energy efficient air conditioning equipment which is efficiency rated “A” as against the “F” rated systems still sold here.

It also uses R410a refrigerant, which is an ozone-layer friendly gas, as against R22 which is still commonly used in TRNC.

The better news is, this equipment is very competitively priced.

Generally speaking, this equipment is no dearer than Fujicool, which is a good budget brand here. You can buy cheaper but I wouldn't put my name to it.

We also service and repair existing air conditioning systems.

a/c units should be serviced at least once a year, either at the beginning of the cooling season or the heating season.

We got our place in late 2006, never had them serviced! Clean the internal filters out myself and had no problems yet. Maybe we are just lucky (famous last words lol)

Surely the amount of actual usage should determine the need for when a service should take place. We only use as a holiday home.

4got to say, how much would I have spent by now if I had all 4 of my aircon units serviced 5 times each since late 2006? How much is it to service 4 aircon units?

Clean filters are a must to maintain efficiency. DIY

Condensate drains need cleaning to avoid water "leaks". DIY?

Gas charges need checking/topping-up to prevent excess power consumption and early compressor failure. Not DIY

Full service costs 45TL per unit, minimum 2 units, including gas.

I would agree that Gas charging is not DIY, but still think that automatically servicing a minimum of once per year regardless of the amount of use a unit has is unneccessary and just an excuse for companies to make easy money.

If I'd had all mine done every year since 2006 I'd have spent £400 + on servicing now! Up to this point i've spent nothing. Ok, I do check them myself, and if their performance and efficiency started to drop and or my leccy bills started to noticably increase than i'd get them looked at, but until such time as they do I will carry on as I have.

Obviously everyone has their opinions which I respect, but these are mine and until experience shows me otherwise I will stick with it.

Have a good sunday everyone.

"just an excuse for companies to make easy money"

It is actually the manufacturers recommendation, not ours.

I'm not disputing that Vaughan, but I would imagine that a manufacturers recommendation would be based on 'normal usage' i.e. a permanant resident using the unit regularly.

Whereas, in the case of a holiday home situation where the place is only actually occupied for four or five weeks per year I don't it believe it needs the same frequency of service. We tend to come at easter (no aircon used) and summer (when it is), so use aircon on average for 2 weeks per year !!

I will agree with you that this recommendation is based on "regular" use, rather than "occasional" use.

However, condensate drains can block through lack of regular water flowing through them.

Gas leaks, due to poor installation, occur whether the unit is running or not.

I don't disagree with you on that Vaughan. I guess its about whether the individual has an awareness of such things and knows when something needs sorting and when it doesn't.

Btw, I wasn't casting any aspertions on your company as such, as my comment re easy money was aimed at some companies that would no doubt 'service' something whether it needed it or not.

Hi Milzer,

Your comments both on the necessity of maintenance and the frequency were both spot-on and very valid.

As a person who values his Sundays I find that maintenance can prevent breakdowns, followed by call-outs.

We try to offer people our best advice but the decision is always with them.

Hi Vaughan, what do you do about leak testing if a system was found to be leaking due to poor installation?

We have electronic leak testers that can register leaks down to a few ounces a year. Leaks are often found in mechanical joints in the pipework. We re-do flares (which are often poor) and re-test for leaks after vaccing the system down and checking that it holds. We also recover refrigerant and do not release it to atmosphere which, in the UK, is an offence punishable by a gaol sentence.

Most of the above is "foreign" to most a/c "companies" here in TRNC.

Hi Vaughn tried to send you an email about the ATV you were interested in but it bounced back to me so when I saw your posting I thought I would read it as I did not know you did aircon as well which I will need very shortly .It's very interesting to read about sevicing because I ]get exactly the same fromsome of my customers who seem to practise the old adage "if it ain't bust don't fix it " that is of course un til it does bust then it must be my fault . Still nowt as queere as folk as they say up north. Any way if your still interested in the ATV perhaps we could have a deal on some aircon units as well as the scooter give me a ring if your still interested

Regards phil
