In the past days one of the members here (minertor) has posted untrue accusations, using foul language as well, about the Kyrenia Walks I did in the past months. I cannot let this go without a comment. More than 320 (mainly British, but also many other nationalities) people joined me for this walk in Kyrenia. I provided a laminated map of Kyrenia of 1300 AD to help the participants understand where they walked and what they saw or couldn't see anymore. I have NOT charged one Lira, Pound or whatever for the walks. I didn't ask for tips. When the walk was finished the participants were NOT obliged to buy anything - they COULD however buy the map (for use with friends or for any other reason) and they COULD buy a CD I made with the much more extended lecture on Medieval Kyrenia. The offer was without any obligation. If however anyone feels he/she became part of a 'scam' let me know and I'll refund the money you spent out of your own free will.

It is very sad that I have to defend myself against someone who is always ready to stab me in the back, because he doesn't like me. Well, I wrote here what I had to say and will leave it at that. Another lesson learned. The many friendly emails I also received after one of the Kyrenia Walks are still very much appreciated.

I forgot to add: any complaints about the (free) Kyrenia Walks are welcome here or can be sent to the email address I use for history related subjects: mcf.trnc@gmail.com . Thank you.

I was unable to attend any of the walks due to work, but have been to one of your talks. I also know several people who went on the walks. No-one had anything but praise for them, and were very surprised at the amount of "invisible" history that we pass by every day without realising. So, from me anyway, thanks Hans.

Hans, we know the true man, and we know you for what you are. Ok you may upset a few people for being outspoken, But you say what you believe, and in my book that's a good thing. Keep Crusading, it is always a pleasure to talk to such an educated man as your self.

I would second message 4 as I have been on one of the Kyrenia walks (January) and it was very interesting. Can't understand why anyone would be critisizing this, as there was no pressure to buy map or c.d (but I did anyway)

We joined one of your Kyrenia walks during our Easter stay and found it very informative. We saw historical sites we didn't think existed and they were only one street away from where we regularly walked and yet we hadn't realised their existence. At no time were we presssurised for payment for the guided walk - we could have just walked away at the end of the walk. However, we decided to purchase the CD.

We also have walked on 2 sepatate occasions with you Hans and have been to one of your lectures, we were very well treated and were educated to many things "Cyprus" for that we thank you, we were never nor did we feel pressurised to buy anything, i think it might be appropriate to ignore these people, let them accuse or belittle we know differently, or better still it might broaden their horizons to join in and find out how much goes into preparation, but then again it might be too intellectual for some A

Hans, my wife and I attended one of your talks on the Third Crusade last February I think it was, and we both really enjoyed the evening. I doubt that anyone who has been to a talk or a walk would say otherwise, and there is no suggestion of any kind that they are a money-making scam. That's just pure malicious nonsense. On that other post I attempted to point out that two of the posters, Hattikins and Minertor, had been significantly less polite than your "prattlers" comment, but was censored by the No.1 administrator. Minertor in particular used foul language that was in no way disguised or concealed, but for some reason No. 1 let that go. I note Minertor used the same expression on another post also. I can understand how some of your comments can be abrasive to their targets, but surely we are all adults who can take care of ourselves. To begin a post, as Hattikins did, simply to complain about being bullied was, in my humble opinion, exceedingly precious.

I went on the walk around Girne. It was so informative. I didn't buy a cd or map and there was no pressure to do so. Just a very enjoyable couple of hours listening to a very interesting man on a subject that he so obviously loves.

Keep up the good work Hans, you are doing an important service to the island of Cyprus. Without people like you, much of this history would be forgotten in dusty books.

We took part in one of the Kyrenia walks, loved it, learnt a lot and would not mind doing it again as we missed the end because of torrential rain. We are also looking forward to the Famagusta walks. The walks and lectures add a new dimension to learning about Cyprus. I do not know what has been said (or, indeed, written) to upset Hans, but hope it will not put him off sharing his fascinating knowledge with others.

Hello Hans If I add my good wishes for the future and thank you for the time and effort you put into our walk I would simply be adding to the previous postings. It would be the truth but not actually helpful. Instead let me give you an old English proverb. Empty vessels make the most noise. Which translates into Idiots shout the loudest. Whilst I can appreciate the provocation I would suggest that you ignore idiot's commenting on that which they do not understand. I don't always agree with your point of view, but this has nothing to do with your professionalism in your approach to the history of this island. That anyone could reproach you for being less than honest I find truly incredible. Clearly I should add that we are in no way related and I do not get a commission from the sale of your maps or CD's. All Best wishes for the future Hans and thank you for taking the time out to share your knowledge with us.

RE msg 40, denizen: (...) the mementoes were a bit overpriced (...) => You are right. 10 Lira for the map of old Kyrenia, 15 Lira for the CD or 20 Lira for the set. 1: I have the skills to make them. 2: You don't. And now in random order. 3: A CD writer for the purpose costed me 130 Euros. 4: My wife went to Girne every week twice to have the maps printed: 3 TL a piece. 5: We laminated them at home (1,5 TL per laminate, time, plus laminator: 400 TL.). 6: Damage of laminated maps by people who folded the maps although I asked to be careful. Our (my wife and I) driving from Alsancak 16 times to Girne v.v. My wife and I having a cup of coffee afterwards and a small lunch (or did you offer us anything?). I could go on.

I'm sure about 500 people will join for the Famagusta walks - and it'll be the old adagium here also: don't like it? Don't join. P.S. Where do we agree? Yes, I have a charming wife. |

msgs 42 &43, calm down man, i arent complaining, the walk made up the dif in what i thought the mementoes were worth. but seeing as you raised the subject, the map we were given was NOT laminated, it is now, and the laninater didn't cost anywhere near 400tl, not even a tenth of that. the map was on ordinary paper in a flimsy plastic cover. it was hard to work out where we were on the map because it was looking from seaward, we were walking toward the sea. the cd case said a lecture by yourself, the cd contained 255 photos, no dialogue or commentary, the pics could have been of anyone, anywhere. if you call in Jessics and see my partner he can save you quiet a bit reproducing your map especially, he recons about 25kurus each. now you have made me look like a whinger, and i wasnt D

Paul, thread is closed (afaiac), so now for another subject. By the way: is msg 58 still written in the English language?! OK, whatever. I'm playing on line chess now with Temujin, a young man in Mongolia. Fascinating, computers, eh?

As you know the East Mediterranean Yacht rally will visit Kyrenia in May, Hans has offered to conduct tours for the participants in French, German Dutch and English at absolutely no cost. When i aproached him some months ago i asked a bout a fee, I think this speaks for itself. He is dpoing something positive abaout promoting the TRNC

Hans,re msg 21.I have looked for that thread and it strangely seems to have disappeared(maybe you already knew that and therefor issued the challenge) However I did find this one, even Elko mentions in msg 2 that you made some very serious allegations. Liar am I? I will expect your appology forthwith, hopefully before this thread gets closed down. http://www.phpbb88.com/trncvillaowners/viewtopic.php?t=282&mforum=trncvillaowners
