Hi I have alarm systems that work as a telephone (with sim card) are set with key fob, notify you and 9 other nominated numbers when activated illegally (i.e. break in), has a distress alarm and messaging worked from same key fob, can notify you if one of your family enters when you are not there (or exits). The system is the latest on the market and is less costly than tradition key pad alarms. It has compatability to PIR detectors, door and window contacts, smoke and flood detectors and can be expanded up to 16 items. It is wireless - so no cables and major drilling and unsightly wires. My number is 0533 843 8232 Regards Mark

Mark's system sounds a fantistic all singing, all dancing system. No mention of cost?? But, if you want a cheap option, I saw some gadgets in Mr. Pound last week that were alarms, for a window or door. Granted I didn't take much notice, they are likely to be battery operated and you'd need to check how loud they were, but 10tl per window/door, not bad for a cheap fix - unless you feel you're in a particularly risky area of town and need something more substantial.

Hi James, if you are back in the UK, you can get stand alone passive infa red units from B&Q etc. You fit them to the corner ceiling of the room (no wires). When movement is dedected they emit a VERY loud shrill alarm which will hopefully send them running. You can also get a box to attach to the property (solar powered) which flashes to show the house is alarmed and deter would be burglars. Each unit is only around £15, so it works out as an effective low cost option. You may also want to consider shutters.

Hi Basheer, No if the the power fails the system would have to be manually switched back on.
