Dennis, i dont want to burst your bubble, but it is only a Union jack when it is flown at sea, otherwise its called the Union flag.

jock1,

It is often stated that the Union Flag should only be described as the Union Jack when flown in the bows of a warship, but this is a relatively recent idea. From early in its life the Admiralty itself frequently referred to the flag as the Union Jack, whatever its use, and in 1902 an Admiralty Circular announced that Their Lordships had decided that either name could be used officially. Such use was given parliamentary approval in 1908 when it was stated that "the Union Jack should be regarded as the National flag".

How to fly the Union Flag correctly is a question seldom asked however often is the case that it is flown the wrong way up. Public and high profile institutions are not exempt from this folly.

How can you tell if it is upside down? The flag appears symmetrical to a glancing eye, however it isn't.

The broader (wider) diagonal white stripe should be at the top on the side of the flag nearest the flagpole.

Sotlands 3 greatest footballing moments, Beckhams missed penalty, Beckham being sent off, Wayne Rooney being sent off.
