Hi,

Jeannie has the pronunciation spot on.

The word is becoming popular as a first name for girls in Ireland with the spelling Ceilidh.

dublinderm - thank you for your confirmation.

With regard to the spelling of girls names in Ireland, I think it's a shame that some of the traditional names are now being spelt in 'the modern way', e.g. Niamh is now being spelled as Neeve, because that is how it is pronounced.

Still some lovely names though.

Jeannie,

How right you are.

The Irish (Gaelic) alphabet does not contain the letters J, Q, V, W, X, or Z. So mh = v, but so does bh as in Siobhan.

We just like to keep things nice and complicated.

Bill - My Mum's sister's name - Kathleen - but always called 'Katleen' by her Nan.

DD - am I correct in thinking that the correct pronunciation of 'Grainne' is 'Gronya' (or something similar)?

Thanks.

Jeannie and TopTen,

Padraig is pronounced Paw'd rig.

Grainne is Graw Nyah.

The first a in each name should have an accent over them called a FADA. This is the Gaelic for long, so the vowel gets stretched.
