In Esentepe we have a very tuneful, almost relaxing muezzin, although to be fair we don't live right under the minaret.. but he does carry a tune well. I know I've heard one with a less than tuneful rendition of the call to prayer, in Ozankoy. All the dogs started to howl... It seems to be quite a widespread problem as 'Istanbul's tuneless muezzins get voice training' http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8665977.stm

Hilltop... you unbeliever! I don't think they don't use taped or piped music as far as I know it's all live. If it is tapes the mosque at Ozankoy should take theirs back and ask for 'Now That's What I Call Mosque 57' ;¬)

When I hear the call to prayer, I am reminded that in many countries that I might hear it, my life could be in some sort of peril, either deliberately or as an innocent bystander. I am reassured and grateful that TRNC is not amongst those countries.

I have to say that on my first trip to Istanbul I wasn't warned about the muezzin and whether they were in tune or not, being awoken by the morning call scared the life out of me!

My worst experience of a muezzin calling the faithful to prayer was in Penang, Malaysia. (That country is very, very devout). We were woken every morning at 6 a.m., despite being in the 'touristy area' by the beach, and as for the evening calls to prayer......! All conversation came to an abrupt stop when eating in the local restaurants as the muezzin/s used amplifiers. It was absolutely ear-shattering stuff and went on at full blast for around 25 minutes !

Our lovely muezzin in Zeytinlik has been replaced by the satellite one that delights in making it last as long as possible with great pauses for dramatic effect and lots of tuneless warbling - oh and it's much much louder than it used to be and the dogs have taken to singing along too - gotta love it though!

My TC neighbours say they are all the same person on a radio link. The various muezzins take it in turns to do their stint and there is one guy who is really flat and tuneless it was his turn about Christmas!

After 1 year in Lapta, I would have to say it's the same guy each time.. If it's recorded or not, I wouldn't like to say. But it actually messes with my head a bit to be honest. I am 100% agnostic, I believe in not one thing that I can't see, touch, taste, feel or hear... However I find the call to prayer very peaceful for some reason.......

sometimes its recorded, sometimes not.. a friend managed (a long time ago) to setup a bob marley casette into the tape palyer one of nicosias mosques.. that was a real big fun in the morning.. ha ha ha... depending on the time and if müezzins are availlable, they either sing live or programme a tape player.. here in lapta, dont know whats better.. the best is when there is no muezzin and the tape player is set wrong due to a powercut at night.. happy times
