If I have a computer from Britain, can I go to a hot spot and expect it to work. Do I need to buy something extra to enable it to work over there? Sorry to sound so ignorant but have never tried to do this before.

Linda - make sure you have your virus checker/firewall - up to date, and that your laptop is set up to provide secure encryption, if you are going to use wi-fi hot spots. If you are asked to connect up to an 'unsecure/unencrypted' network - do not do it. Also as Kavenkoy says - avoid doing internet banking.

Linda, It may not be quite as simple as suggested. If the WiFi connection is unprotected (you will get an unlocked padlock symbol) it's probably best avoided, unless attached to your hotel (I know Pia Bella offer free access in their garden and also available in some rooms) There are eXtend hotspot areas which require you to purchase a password and user name from eXtend (it works like Cloud or BT Openzone in UK) Another way of connecting to the internet is through a 3G dongle. This gets you onto the phone network and so is available virtually everywhere in TRNC. The 3G method is fine if you are staying for a reasonable time, and are wanting low usage like emails, otherwise can work out expensive. If you decide to try this you will need an unlocked 3G dongle (try eBay or use the O2 dongle) When you get to TRNC buy a data sim card from Telsim or Turkcell. both shops will help you to set up if you take your computer in.

Another thing also although WiFi is offered in most places you need to ask them for their key so that you can connect to their network. Do it all the time when we are in TRNC and have no problem.
