It is a router but it sounds like you will need someone to help you set it up and get it working for you. John

Yes you have got a router - depending on your PC system, you may find that by connecting it up (as per manual) it will take a few moments to search for your network and once identified - it will configure itself accordingly. If not - you will have to contact your ISP to get the settings, and do it manually. I have an edimax (earlier model) and i am happy with the reception i get and the distance it works with - at the furthest vend of my garden i get about 25% signal reception (better than my old netgear router) and there is no distortion using skype. Ensure you have the security set up for it (should be part of the automatic setup process) and enter a password of you choice. Good luck GG

Of course, if you just want to network your PC with your laptop you don't need a router, just a network card in each and some ethernet cable wired for a direct connection between the two. Better still use wireless.

Chris, 1. Are you wanting to have Internet access? 2. Or do you already have Internet Access. 3.Internet Access is provided by an ISP (Internet Service Provider). Have you one/want one? Geoff

An access point is not an actual router as it has 1 port at the back, these sometimes are not safe either as it enables your internet to be shared with others that live around you. However if you only use no more than 1 computer at home then I can set the router up for you if you like with a password....but just be aware that you will not be able to use more than 1 PC unless its wifi built-in

Given that it is a wireless 801.11 g Wireless I think we can take it as read that it is a wireless router. In order to use it as an access point you will need to know the settings from Extend, your ISP provider. I am not familiar with the brand or model you have but it may be possible to just connect an ehernet cable from your existing Extend Access point to the back of the router and then wirelessly distribute the access to the laptop. In effect you would be using your new equipment as a bridge. It is dependent on the make and model though. Use the buiilt in security in the router to protect your wireless network. WEP or WPA. This will stop others surfing your signal for free. All you do is put in a password on the router and then on the laptop. You only have to do this once. This is sometimes called the network Key. Hope that this helps, it isn't that complicated but you may need some basic information from Extend to enable you to successfully set up. Harold
