Customs wanted 16.5K for a 2 year old LR freelander, it just was not worth importing the car!! Bought a nice little Toyota Allex, ex demo from Tigra Trading, it does us fine!

Mrs snakes if you had imported the freelander you would have bought in something that cost a lot new as a opposed to the alex a smaller cc car

The tax is based on the value of the car

Plus a tax on engine size on engine size and fuel type (diesel costing more than petrol)

So a sub 1600 petrol, costs less in "$" than a plus 2000cc diesel will cost at a higher "$" rate by the pus 2000 charge

The value of the car i.e the smaller and older the less that tax is

To get the car to TRNC £650 plus 300ytl on landing

So if you've owned a nice little 1200 cc car from new for 8 years your bill is likely to be £1200-£1700 for the import cost plus shipping cheaper than renting or buying locally at least you know its history

The car cost 35K aprox new in Aug 2007. When making the enquiry in June 2009, Customs wanted 16.5K, which was the just under the market value of the vehicle, for me, it was not worth it.
