gates said Lara Beach. This is also a problem on Alagadi Beach, we have encountered this on beach cleans.

We were told that a lot of this type of medical waste is dumped at sea by countries such as Lebanon. Be very careful.

Yes my mum got one in her foot 6 years ago here on holiday in the Karpaz . We were told it was from medical waste dumped at sea .... outrageous but obviously still happening!!!!

I would have thought it is highly unlikely to catch any form of disease from a needle that has been out to sea for so long and then dried up on a beach - but still a scary prospect if you get one stuck in your foot.

I think Mr. Gates has definitely done the right thing and taken all the sensible precautions available.

He is to be admired and congratulated for his actions and, indeed, for taking the responsibility for 'publishing' this topic on this forum, so that others may be aware that such a hidden, and very real, danger can exist and actually does happen.

Unfortunately also found several on Karsiyaka beach last year whilst doing the Turtle Protection patrolling.

Also seen them in the past on Diana beach. Seems to be a problem along the entire North Coast.

Msg 4

We were told it was from medical waste dumped at sea ...

Illegal under IMO regulations as the med is classed as a 'special area' under their law.

We were told that a lot of this type of medical waste is dumped at sea by countries such as Lebanon. Be very careful.

if this is the case, the prevailing currents in the eastern med run from the east side of the med around the north of us/ south turkey. With the current wind direction - north - it will wash up here.

Is there any chance the needles may have been used by 'users' as none around here????

gates - wish you and your son all the best and hope he has no serious effects after his unfortunate experience.
