If you use a gas BBQ with lava rock then the marinade and any fat creates smoke and the BBQ taste... I use both and it's difficult to tell the difference unless I put some fresh rosemary on the charcoal just before cooking..

Any way to answer you question.... no, I know of no place in the north where the prices are not simply astronomical. However getting something as big as a Gas BBQ over the border is not so simple.

Yes Groucho you are right, plus gas is quicker, more controllable, and much, much more convenient. I cant tell the difference in taste!!!

Or just take your gas cooker outside, This a been atalking pint of mine and my friends for years,

There is a great Divide, Gas versus Wood.

Barbercue , Must be wood, we collect olive, carob, we get sack fulls of driftwood, all free of charge,

I had friends who used to say , ah but the fat drips onto the coals and tastes the same.

Sorry Im a wood man, (and I wouldnt waste money on Charcoal,) just make it in the bread oven

Gas aint Barbercue. Yes its convenient, and easy, But if its worth doing, its worth doing right.

Lee,

A gas BBQ is nothing like a gas cooker... It's worth noting that there are carcinogens associated with using wood as fuel for cooking. Still 'what doesn't kill only makes you stronger'... until it does kill you, that is.

Hi JohhnyLee,

Use carob, olive etc all the time, cheaper and it's ready to cook in 10-20 mins,

depending on how thick the wood is.

Had one tonight, yum,yum yum.

Also, you can through on some fresh pine cones,

for a bit of extra flavour when you're nearly done, with wood/coals.

Sorry stockiefan, can't help you with info, brought mine with me.

Groucho folks have been cooking with wood since time began, you eat food that to can kill you, gas too can kill you, if not used properly. To be worried that you 'might' get cancer because you cook with wood is taking things to the extreme..... If that theory is a proven fact, why does the scouts still make fires to cook with?. Wood has been used by man since dot.......

Dizzy,

The Scouts never cooked food over the naked flames all the time I was in the movement. It was all billy cans, enamel mugs and kettles, which got black as a witches hat and took an age to clean with Brillo pads and paste made from Daz washing powder.

I don't think it's taking things to extreme to avoid carcinogens when all the science tells us what we may not have known previously... In pre-Victorian times all the household excrement was kept in a bucket in the kitchen until the link to cholera et al was established and modern drainage systems were developed... people had probably done that for thousands of years.... didn't make it safe practice though.

This is good fun and interesting, I just love doing thing's the old fashioned way, and I think a bit of cooking on alfresco, like our ancestors did, is great fun ( and it tastes better)

We go to lots of deserted beaches, I always keep a small barbecue grill with us, i love building a pebble ring filling it full of driftwood, and cooking on it,

Message 8 I was only joking when I said take your cooker outside, (figure of speach) Course a gas barbercue isn,t like a gas cooker,

Its a Gas grill.

Think every one had better stay indoors, eat dry biscuts, dont switch on the electric, gas, or light the fire !!! we are all dooooomed.......

Still think gas bbq are only for those with no taste buds!!! ..... and no sense of fun or adventure......and no sense of humour......

I await the flack with trepidation.......
