So the police, unable to see how daft they make themselves look, have decided to make an example of themselves...

Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton has been charged over a stunt he performed on a public road in Australia.

The British driver was stopped by police after performing a "burnout", spinning his car to leave tyre marks on the road in front of fans, before the Melbourne Grand Prix in March.

His silver Mercedes road car was impounded after he was pulled over close to the Albert Park circuit.

He was charged with intentionally losing control of a vehicle.

I just wonder how many aussie drivers they charge with doing a wheel spin?

His defence will be that, at no time was the car out of control and he could do it as many times as they want without doing so... LOL

It was on a public road not the race track, would you like to see it done outside your house in the UK. There is no excuse for spinning a car around on a road.

Smoggyjim, you are right I wouldn't like to see it done outside my house - but I also wouldn't expect the fuzz to do anything more than give somebody a ticking off for a first offence, especially as he was contrite when taken to task...

As he is a Mcpooh driver,I would like to see him locked up for the rest of the season.Sacking his dad was not one of his better moves either.

Why is it illegal to spin the car wheels anyway?

Geoff, it was more spinning the whole car than spinning the wheels.

Looking on the news it was on a busy main road in the city.

It also says he was 'fish tailing' the car whilst doing this 'burnout'. That is dangerous!

If it was another young man, we would call him a yob and all be up in arms.

$30,000 fine and car crush I say!

From my experience of driving in Sydney what he was doing is typical of what many young lads there do - they would normally just get a warning on the first occasion - of course Hamilton is a pom, say no more nudge nudge!!

He should be treated like anyone else would be, and not given any special favours or made an example of just because he is famous, if what he did was illegal and dangerous he should be fined.

Does the fact that he's in direct competition with aussie Mark Webber make you wonder if they were stalking him hoping he'd put a foot out of line so they could nab him and make him take his eye off the ball?

OK maybe I'm paranoid but I get the distinct impression that his cards were marked the minute he set foot in the country....

Hamilton is a very skilled driver and may have been in control of his vehicle at all times. However, the impressionable young idiots watching him are NOT such very skilled drivers and may just think that it's cool to show their mates that they can do it, just like Hamilton.

The cemeteries are full of young lads who drove way beyond their skills and that's sad but not as sad as the others that they killed at the same time.

Hamilton is a role model paid millions and he should be fined according to his income. If the system allowed it, I wouldn't think a million pounds would be too much. What sort of fines are levied for dangerous driving or similar during a F1 race?
