I am putting this thread on with trepidation as I know some of the answers that I could receive, before I start I must emphasis that love Northern Cyprus very much, otherwise I would not have squandered some of my hard earned wedge on a villa there,

My point is today as driving through the lanes of Kent today on my way to a job, it was really beautiful, not a cloud in sky, leaves on the trees , blossom out, 25 degrees, everything looked really pretty and green, and to top it all very little traffic, happily listening to radio 2, I think we have the best of both worlds when it gets grotty here, over on plane to our little place in the sun.

We dont think we could make the full transision of moving full time to Cyprus, but I just wondered what some of the ex-pats did miss about the UK, so here we go and I have got my tin hat on.

When I lived there 1981 to 1983 I think all I missed was curling up in front of a roaring fire in winter.

I did sometimes get sick of seeing that bloody boiling sun every day.

Max - just to make your mouth water, we had some Jersey Royal potatoes at the weekend. Smothered in butter.

I'd have to agree with Chelpet's message No.1. The UK looks lovely at the moment, especially in the sunshine, Everything is green, all the blossom is out on the trees. I still maintain that you can't beat a sunny summer morning in the UK.

Should add that I also love TRNC; however, I, personally, could not live there all the time.

I have Radio 2 here (and Terry Wogan is no longer on, so I would have missed him if I had stayed in the UK)

I have all the soaps I like to watch. I drove through some lovely country lanes here today with the sun shining. Do I miss anything - yes - Penshaw Monument.

For those of you who don't know what that is, It is a monument which Miners put up in the 1800's as a thankyou to the Mine Owner - Lord Lambton. It is like the Acropolis which stands on a hill in the north east of England, and whenever I see it I know I am home.

now, I have St Hellian Castle, standing proudly on the hill just like Penshaw Monument to let me know I am home.

No, the only thing I miss is my children and my Grandchildren, but they are at work and at school anyway.

Chris get a sausage... take the skin off and bash into a square. Cook it and enjoy!

The only thing I miss is draught bitter... Sometimes I'd kill for a pint of Eldridge Pope's Royal Oak.

CITIES!! I totally miss the anonymity of a city! I quite like not knowing my neighbour's names, and i like being able to go out and get blinding drunk, and not get reminded about it the next day! I miss the rain (i've never hated the rain)

and the left over smell it leaves....i miss the grey skies that promise the possibility of sunshine! I miss delivery services from my favourite restaurants, and i miss roaring fires all year long! I miss great TV and all the choices..especially skytv...what a wonderful thing to be able to pause live television!! I miss seeing the shock on someones face when you say 'hi' to a stranger in the street! I miss the unconditional loyalty of my friends... and i suppose i miss most of all the nonchalant attitude of petty gossiping (nothing is taken seriously, and definitely forgotten the next day) I miss knowing that peoples pets are not chained up 24/7!

Wont someone PLEASE BUY MY HOUSE, if only to release me from my agony of being here......?

I don't miss anything, I am glad to be here and have no intentions of returning to the UK, we have it all here, good weather, beautiful scenery, nice people, and just like the UK corruption.

But you can't have everything rosy in the garden.

A few more things i miss...

I miss the NHS! (gosh shock horror) It's good to know that when you've had a serious accident, you will be cared for by 'angels' that do the job for love and not money. Knowing your sheets will be changed, and you will be washed by caring people....and even though the food isn't the tastiest...you at least get fed!

The NHS get slandered all the time, and cuts are always being made...but i miss the fact that the nurses always have kind words and a pat on the hand when you need it no matter what time of the day/night...Long Live The Angels Of The NHS!! I MISS THE NHS!

DD when was the last time you were in a NHS hospital? I use to be a Nurse in the NHS and I can assure you that things have changed for the worse.

NHS treatment in the UK is now a lottery, it depends where you live, which is a sad state of affairs , I trained in the NHS which then was the best in the world I thought, I don't think that can be said of the NHS today, it has been starved of money and staff feel under valued.

Being stuck in motorway traffic jams

Motorway cones & 50 MPH speed restrictions for 12 miles with no work being carried out

Traffic islands with traffic lights that change when yoyu approach them late at niight, and no one else is about

The lovely summer weather

Price of Fuel

Taxes

Sure am Lilli but don't tell anyone ;)

Every time I go home I make a B line for the river. Weeping willows, ducks, swans, green fields and an ice cream.. bliss.

Take my kayak down to the weir with a mate or two, Session the white water and then paddle down to a nice riverside pub for a pint... Perfect.

After reading Daisys list this why we will not go to total commitment, I will agree there are loads of for`s and against`s, and being a person who has hedged my bets all my life, I am looking for the best of both worlds, and I think we have got them, although once family commitments are sorted we intend to spend longer than our current fornightly spells in TRNC.

Incidently our accountant who used our villa for the last 12 days came home today and said that it is hotter in UK than Cyprus although that is due to change very rapidly as bank holiday is coming this weekend it actually reached the dizzy hights of 30 degrees in some places today.

Right now I still live in the UK...and when I move away the things I would miss would be:

Those many, many days of drizzling rain.

Cold winters, that go on for a very, very long time.

The grey skies that we have for far too many months.

High taxes

Petrol Prices

The amount of crime , and pathetically low detection rate

Queues on all of the motorways

Oh sorry, what I really meant was the queues....trying to go anywhere....our roads can't cope!

Dirty beaches

Rip off prices in all of the holiday/tourist attraction places.

Lousy service and food in far too many expensive restaurants.

Lousy service in most stores.

I could go on I suppose....but you might think that I am being negative!

Boots the Chemist's, Cadbury's Chocolate Trifles, snow, flat roads and pavements, my GP, Sainsbury's and Tesco and of course Princess Marshmallows!! Most of the things I used to miss are now available out here or on the Greek side.

Jane nothing in the gazette, Leysdown market is mainly boot fair but on opposite side of main road not behind amusements now, and Cowstead Corner on a Saturday morning, what a change from yesterday only about 15 degress here and a cold North Easterly wind straight off the sea, wish I was in TRNC now, serves me right for getting lippy before.

Just returned from a week in the Uk. I had almost forgotten how lovely May-time is in the Uk. All the blossoms and flowers, the scents etc. As for the choice of food in the supermarkets........blows my mind. But at the moment I still prefer it here.
