Geoff has finally got (after over 40 court appearances) to meet his accuser face to face in the courtroom. Today was the preliminary gearing, hopefully tomorrow will be the final hearing in this saga. For those not familiar with this case, resulting from a dispute with his builder, Geoff was accused of stealing some of the builder's property (Including part of a pot of paint). He was, together with his wife Mary, arrested at the airport on return from a trip to the UK, he spent 4 days in jail, Mary spent 2 days. Mary's reason for jail and arrest was given as because she may tamper with evidence. The legalities of the accusation cannot be discussed as the matter is sub judicial.

Your support by way of your presence at Girne court next to the Post Office 10.00am tomorrow (Wednesday) will be greatly appreciated by Geoff & Mary. (Meet outside at 9.45)

Front page of CT yesterday, main story.

Obviously they could not give specifics but generally fed up by the way they are treated. This has been going on for four years in total. From my experience of going to the court the builder is just being a total ******** trying to destroy Geoff & Mary and it seems the court have no power to force him or anyone else to attend. So G&M turn up as demanded but prosecution witnesses do not, case adjouned and away they go home.

It is a diabolical situation that could easily be solved by the judge simply locking people up for contempt and if that did not work just dismiss the case.

Having spoken at length over the last few months, Geoff will never give up. This has already screwed up their lives so has nothing further to loose by fighting to the end.

We love living here and hate to knock the system, it is not our country but sometimes............ GGRRRRRRRRR

Come on Dr Eroglu et al please give us a break.

Obviously, the builder must have friends in 'high places' for this utter sham and total insult and mockery towards these decent people to continue.

To be arrested at the airport on arrival and imprisoned for the ALLEGED 'theft' of a few worthless scraps of building material and a pot of paint, when these unwitting victims weren't even in the country - what sort of image does TRNC really wish to portray to the outside world?

It certainly is NOT 'Hosgeldiniz'!

If Dr. Eroglu intends to keep to his word, he should have this nonsense quashed 'post haste'.

I wonder if they have such a thing as false imprisonment here, or would Geoff & Mary have to apply to the ECHR when they are found not guilty?

I also wonder if Geoff & Mary ever didn't turn up at the court whether they'd be found guilty immediately?

The reason for this case being brought against Geoff is simple.

Geoff was in dispute about the contractual obligations of the builder, which despite many meetings with him, were not rectified.

So Geoff refuses final payment until they are, and takes a summons against the builder.

Hereon is my opinion on what happens next.

The builder does some brainstorming - how can he stop this annoying man in his tracks?

Well, a civil case can be stopped if there is a criminal case pending. And as a bonus if the case can be proven then Geoff is evicted from the island and cannot proceed on the civil case.

For the builder then problem Yok.

Hence the trumped up charge. However once that the evidence is produced the case does not look strong. Then the best strategy is deemed to be to delay the case as long as possible, this may also he hopes wear Geoff down so that he agrees to the builders demands (The builder will drop the case if Geoff will do this)

The delaying tactics have, even for a court here, have reached the ridiculous. Non attendance by the prosecution witnesses has become the norm, with excuses ranging from "need time to get paperwork together", "Out of the country" to "My daughter is ill" resulting in now over 50 court attendances by Geoff. But if Geoff missed one attendance he would be back in jail.

What would REALLY REALLY REALLY help Geoff is support from his countrymen. What has happened to the British? Have we all turned into "I'm all right Geoffs"? Last hearing had 1 supporter.

If 50 Brits had turned up at his last hearing then I believe the case would have been thrown out because of the show of support.

Geoff was told by one lady that she dare not come because she could get photographed - how paranoid, what planet is she from?

The next hearing is 9th June, at 10.00am, be there 15 mins b4 please.

If we can get 50 Brits there, then the newspapers will have a field day. One good newspaper coverage is worth 1000's of isolated complaints, especially if it goes in the turkish langauge papers.

Well said David. Hope you got home safe.

Might be worth a revisit after Sunday and see how many turn out there. Never mind the 10% who have viewed if 10 turned out it would be a bonus.

A very similar story to the "Stop the Auction" thread.

Support from the ex-pat community, who probably do not have an awful lot to do, would be wonderful.

But all I see is apathy. And it is very sad. From a once proud nation. Where is the "spirit of Dunkirk"?

If I were in TRNC, I would attend BOTH the 6th June Auction and the 9th June hearing.

For those people who are there at the moment - please, please make an effort to show your support.

Re msg 28 - totally agree. Too many want to 'discuss' but not take part. A lot of 'verbal' support - on here.

Not available 9th but will be there on 6th

Best of luck to all concerned

Geoff and I would like to thank all for the support on the post so far. I will put as much as I can but please bear in mind that as the case is still running we are limited as to what we can say I do hope you all understand .As many of you know I am no longer allowed in the court with Geoff for very good reason so it is therefore very important to know that we have support as Geoff is in there on his own and I am outside waiting. We believe that North Cyprus is a wonderful place to be in and love it very much but if a few steps are taken to protect people then we are sure that it will only be for the good of Cyprus and encourage investment and interest, with confidence people will invest, that can only be for the good of North Cyprus.

Not all are negative if we address issues instead of hiding them away it can bring better for the future. Despite all of our own problems that this has bought about we do believe that we should support others as we have in the past & will do so in the future.

We hope to see many of you at our next court appearance on 9th June 10 am in court.

With thanks

Geoff & Mary

Phil, I wish I was.

As you are aware you do not know from one day to the next if the proceedings will be on.

I do wish there were at least a couple more people who would go along and spend time in the court room. It is very lonely for Geoff sat in the dock with nobody to turn to for a friendly smile or nod of head. All he has is an interpreter. As Mary adds above, she is not allowed into the court until she has given her statements which at this rate could be months away.

If nothing else, it is another TRNC experience to sit in the court. You may not understand much of what is said but with recent events, who knows who will be next and at least you will know how it works!!

I know they both take heart from you Phil as an old friend who knows all that has gone on and tries to keep in touch from afar.
