In todays cyprus today from Akfinas Bank, regarding the auction of homes. Basically it goes on to say an attempt to create public opinion against the bank. It says we respectfully announce to the public that it is a criminal offence to create public opinion by hindering the above indicated legal process and to perform maicious acts against the bank, furthermore it has legal sanctions and the bank reported against the concerned persons that they have commited criminal acts, as well as entered civil actions. Are they referring to the people who want to protest. I thought that they were going to postpone the auction.

Maybe one way to 'legally' demonstrate against the bank is for expats to withdraw their funds, let them know why you are withdrawing your funds, and bank elsewhere. I wouldn't go near them with a bargepole !!

I have received an email which is word for word what lilli quotes. Does this mean we will be arrested if we go to the auction? As I am out in Cyprus at that time, I was going to go with a friend to support these poor owners. I haven't heard that the auction has been postponed.

Amazing

Lose your life savings fraudulently -no protection under the law.

Protest about a bank aiding that injustice, THEN the full wieight of the law comes into play!

Guess when some potential buyers read of such things on the web, It will be a case of 'stuff that,I'm out',another great coup for the TRNC public relations machine

Maybe consultants should be brought in from Turkey to explain what Public Relations means, and how it affects business.

This link should give access to the full notice.

I do not think many foreigners use this bank.

It does not surprise me however bescause all the people associated with building here are bullies who threaten you at the slightest opportunity.

I just wish there were more than a few dozen who would join in because we could quickly bring this country to a halt if they did. By witholding payments for electric water, beledyse costs etc.

Is this the unacceptable face of capitalism ? If so we shouldn't accept this kind of bullying.

I'll be at the auction.

If as stated the unnamed owners of Akfinans read all this rhubarb I issue a challenge.

Instead of the threats and posturing against our small community who live in TRNC why not meet us face to face to explain how you think you would react in the face of such intimidation.

90% of us live very happily in this country as temporary residents. Most of us have no intention of leaving. But acts like this one certainly give rise to some doubts. Particularly as many of us are experience similar levels of threats and bullying over our own unfinished properties.

We have been made welcome in our new communities by our Cypriot neighbours many of who feel as deeply as we do about this foolishness. So look and ask around at how everyone feels about your bank, you will be loosing more business every day by people from your own country leaving and going to other banks.

So once again, meet a delegation to hear the thoughts first hand of ALL the TRNC

Even former TRNC president Rauf Denktash is lending his support to stop this disgusting situation. The rate of 80% interest charged (from CT) on this loan is nothing short of loan-sharking. How did they realistically expect the mortgagees to repay it? Is Akfinans saying they knew nothing about the sales contracts on this land? What checks did they do to establish if any sales contracts had been entered into prior to granting the mortgage?

In my opinion this is bad and retarded business practice, even without a recession, and will only create more negative publicity for TRNC at a time when we desperately need to encourage investments/positive business practices. The economy is dead, but there are many ways via positive changes in the construction to inject growth into it.

Akfinans said that it's a criminal offence to create public opinion about them, but the last thing I knew, alleged slander/libel was a civil matter. The defence to which is the truth or personal opinion.

My fears are that this kind of threat will now put off a lot of people who intended to go to the auction and support these poor people. If there is a police presense there, could people be arrested and detained or even deported for demonstrating peacefully? I have heard that demonstrations by foreigners is illegal in the TRNC but I don't know if this is true. Perhaps we need this clarified to put peoples minds at rest.

Gordon,

As a Cypriot how do you feel about these events? You are a business man it must surely eventually hurt you if people pulled the plug on coming here on holiday and decided to leave the country.

I know it is unfair to ask yourself but it is people like you and your father that could maybe make these stupid bankers see what they are doing is morally wrong. You mix with many British people and you know they are being treated badly on a day to day basis but this must top the list.

Sorry, but I'm not well-informed on the factual and legal issues surrounding this matter so I must decline to comment. Like yourself I would like to learn more and have asked Elko to that end.

"I have been writing an article a day on NCFP, why - because they are taking my home but they will not silence me.

Take my word for it - the auction is still on and I believe it will go ahead. If I, and all the folks at Kulazksiz 5 have the courage to be there then so should you.

It is a public auction and you are a member of the public. Behave and you have nothing to fear. It is the sheer weight of numbers that counts. Believe me a large crowd who are silent is as effective as a large noisy one.

Don't be intimidated - if you care - be there.

Read NCFP and you will see who they are referring to on the internet.

Am I bovvered??"

This is the usual scare tactics that is often used to put people off attending and shut people up. 80% interest have they just employed Nick Leeson?

The bottom line is this is the government's fault for not introducing laws to protect buyers or enforcing existing laws and allowing banks, lawyers, estate agents, developers etc to run North Cyprus in to the ground. Just my opinion, mind you!

I will be there on the day to show my support for all involved but David msg 8

"I just wish there were more than a few dozen who would join in because we could quickly bring this country to a halt if they did. By witholding payments for electric water, beledyse costs etc."

Right now I just wish to do harm to the people who own and work for this bank."

Comments like these are not helpful the last bit is a direct threat to the people who work for the bank so unless you intend to spend the day in a jail and not at the protest think before you post.

Are the 'powers that be' prepared to risk further jeopardising the reputation and consequential adverse effect on the whole of the TRNC's fragile economy by allowing the unethical and dubious activities of one bank to culminate in the auction of these innocent expatriates' properties?

Do the 'powers that be' realise that the 'Orams' case will pale into insignificance when compared to the massive outcry that will emanate from the international media - newspapers, TV, and last, but not least, the Internet?

Can the 'powers that be' not appreciate that it is preferable to 'sacrifice' the offending bank, rather than to risk sacrificing the forseeable, potentially lucrative future of their beautiful country?

There is still time for this odious scenario to be prevented.

Sorry, I am not stupid just the fingers get carried away at times when fighting injustice anywhere in the world.

The worst injustice for me though is the apathy amongst people not prepared to stand up for themselves.

It hardly seems credible that a responsible lender would allow a debt, running on this interest rate, to go unpaid for so long.

You would think that by the time the debt had doubled, that they would have reached the conclusion that the borrower did not have any intention of paying it off.

The only conclusion I can reach is that they deliberately allowed the debt to escalate out of all proportion in order to make a profit, displaying no evidence of care to the borrower, to the people who had signed contracts and paid money to buy homes, or to the wider public.

They will no doubt say that they have no such duty of care, thus exposing themselves as morally bankrupt.

By their actions, they are themselves discrediting TRNC, and reducing its reputation to that of a rogue state.

On the other side of the coin, as catalkoykid rightly points out, do the people who 'invested' at 15 to 20% not bear some responsibility for supporting this system - where did they think the money came from?

It is vital that people attend this auction, if everyone keeps quiet, no banners, no hostility then nothing can be done, these bullies must not win.

I just hope and pray that nobody actually bids on these properties, God Forbid that any British person would sink that low.

hattikins,

I can assure that at the first sign of banners, actual protest or whatever, the perpetrators WILL be arrested.

The group of residents involved do not wish for this to happen and they look for people to turn out but for there to be no confrontation.
