Hi, I have an Asus Netbook with Linux operating system I have been told that my Telsim dongle will not work with this system and that I need to convert to Windows. Does anyone know if this is possible and where I could get it done and possible cost involved. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as otherwise I will not be able to use the Netbook whilst over here. Thanks for any comments.

I've carried out the change from Linux to Windows (and back) on my Asus net book several times in order to use my Telsim and Turkcell dongles. It's not difficult but you will need the Windows installation disc that should have been supplied with your Asus, together with a copy of Windows XP. As the Asus doesn't have an internal disc drive you will need an external CD or CD/DVD drive with a USB connection.

Thanks for the reply Cyprusfox, I did not get a Windows disc with the Asus, in fact I do not remember it coming with any disc. I have tried a couple of computer shops here to see if they could do what you have said but they say that they do not have an external CD/DVD drive so unablee to take it back to t to help. It looks like I will have to take it back to the UK to sort out. I am surprised that they do not have what is requires to do this out here.

The 3G dongles do work on Linux - what distro are you using? I'm not in Cyprus right now but I might be able to get someone to help if you need.

Distros are distributions - versions of Linux. Ubuntu, Fedora, openSUSE, debian, mandriva etc? Do any of those names sound familiar?

Actually - I just checked, Asus Netbook's come loaded with Xandros, I'm assuming you've never changed it? I'll see if I can put together a guide for the dongle..

Can you tell me what it writes on the Telsim dongle please? So I can see what hardware they are using. BTW - if you do decide to switch to Windows, SunnyCyprus.net do upgrades/repairs and we have external DVD drives too..

Hi AllyTT, The Telsim dongle is a Model K3520, HSDPA USB STICK, CE0682. I would be happy to take it to SunnyCyprus.net if you think that they could help. When are you back in Cyprus?

I'd also say stick with Linux, maybe a different distro though. Xandros can be quite limiting to be honest - they've tried to make everything *too* basic. A quick google search came up with a great tutorial on how to get this particular model of 3G dongle to work on Xandros - http://dalelane.co.uk/blog/?p=254 If you have trouble following the instructions I'll be back in Cyprus 3rd week of June although any of the other guys at SC should be able to help too. Ally.
