Do stick insects have wings? I thought not... only this one appears to have wings...

Could it be a species of grasshopper?

We get them like this and they jump... again I don't think stick insects jump.

This is a water scorpion... looks like it, Maureen seems to have the right Latin name.

I thought so too Gavin, but further research makes me think it may be this.....

Yeah sorry, I think my two posts are a bit muddled,

I think Maureen has identified a Water Scorpion (she got the right name for that) I don't think it's a stick insect.

But I do think this is a grasshopper as we see them and they do fly and jump (Acridinae)

Ah yes, the albeit close to extinct Greenatius Netasourus Digestorinaus. Very rare, this insect. Found exclusively in the Amazon river Basin with only one other exception....the developed northern side of the Five Finger Mountain Range in North Cyprus.

Upon wikipedia research this small but resourceful bug has been studied for years and marveled at as its only true source of food is green fishing nets.

Hilltop, you might consider calling the Turkish Entomology Center and see if they'd like a live sample. You never know, could be big money it it for you.

Deffo a 'Cyprus grasshopper'. Used to see loads of them in the 'old days'. Also in days of yore in Cyprus, we occasionally got swarms of locusts.

Message 13, don't give up the day job, and you got the wrong side of the mountains!

You mean you found him on the South side?! That's incredible! Never before has there been a confirmed circumstance of a GND (as they're affectionately known to those of us that specialize in this kind of thing) actually climbing past the 237 meter altitude marker. Even in extended elevation tests they're rarely gotten beyond 200 meters.

I'd say you indeed have a strong candidate for the Entomology Center.

Re : Msg 1,

Dear Hilltop,

I took a picture of this beauty at Hilltop last summer.

You must be attracting them!
