Well I think AllyTT is more qualified than I am to speak about this subject but I will tell you what I know- which is word of mouth. Turk maarif koleji is undergoing a change. They are starting to take children from middle school onwards. The entrance exam has also been changed for so that children in the 5th grade can take the exam. Previous to this the college was taking children for high school only. There is an entrance exam but they take foreigners without the exam. There is no fee because it's a state school. This means that education is only halfday. Usually the children go to a dershane 2-3 days a week to help with their studies. the school I have no idea when it begins but finishes around 1230pmish. I'm not sure if there is a bus service but there should be. I am sure there are children commuting from all over the island.

I think your daughter needs Cypriot citizenship to enroll. Good luck in the procedure and let us know how it all goes.

Students do not need to have citizenship to enroll. Residency is sufficient, although until residency comes through they can enroll as guest students I believe. As of last year they started taking middle-school students, prior to that it was only a high school. There are no fees as it is a state school. They prepare students either for OSS (Turkey's university entrance exam) or GCSEs at high school level. Students coming from UK (no primary school education in TRNC) go straight in without an exam, students who have had their primary school education locally have to take an exam (highly competitive) to get a place. School starts at 07.55 and ends at 13.05 although there is talk of changing that. There is also school Monday afternoons. The classes are in English and there are special Turkish courses for foreign students. I believe registration for the exam has already ended but your best bet would be to contact Mr. Mehmet Kortay at the Ministry of Education for more information.

If there are any other questions that I can help with let me know and I'll ask Mum. I'm sure she'd love to share information, she's rather lost after suddenly retiring - 30 years at the same school is a long time!

Hi Maggy, yes that means she needs to sit the exam. AFAIK the registration date has passed, there is a chance if she has been here less than 2 years that she could take an alternative exam they prepare for foreign students though, you really should talk to the ministry about it. I should mention though that even if she can register for the exam, local students start preparing for it from 3rd year of primary school and it really is very competitive. They used to only take 40 students in Kyrenia for example, I'm not sure if that has changed lately. Yes there is a TMK in Kyrenia, 19 Mayis TMK. I graduated from there in 2003, it's a brilliant little school. It's a lot smaller than Nicosia TMK, around 300 students. Pixie - my mum's a history teacher. I think she'll need to get bored of retirement first before considering part-time work though

When we moved here in 2005 the teaching medium at 19 Mayis TMK was in English. However, this changed to Turkish that year and my son (11yo) spent a year there not understanding a word. I'm not sure if it has reverted to English again.

Yes, every time the government changes so does the education system at the TMK's. It reverted back to English last year - let's hope it stays like that from now on!

It's the same exam, there are more places in Nicosia but then there are also more students applying. So I'd say it's about equal. Also if you're in the Kyrenia area you can only apply for Kyrenia 19 Mayis TMK I believe. At least that's what it used to be like. In fact students could only go to Nicosia TMK if they wanted to prepare for GCSEs. 19 Mayis TMK only prepares students for Turkish universities.
