Just a question on the breeding of German Sheperds, having seen this breed develope into having week hind quarters over the past 40yrs, what is attractive about these dogs now?

They used to be so beautiful, in all aspects, but looking at them now I hardly recognise them..... they look almost deformed, or is this how every one wants the breed to look now?..... Or can you still find this breed without the hind quarters so badly slopping off........

i used to breed dobermann pincers , same type of dog as german shephards ,ie working dogs , alas they became over breeded , were interbreded , thus inheritrd all the problems from a bad strain , as dizzy says ,the attraction of these once great animals is heart breaking , they dont live that long anymore , and they become attached to you as you do to them , check out where you buy your puppy from , get papers and more importantly hip scans from the vet on both parents .

Why not try KAR.?

So many dogs to choose from and giving a rescue dog a new home is very satisfying.

You would make a sad dog so happy.

Well said Art.

I can confirm that there are a few cross German Shephards up there that would make wonderful pets.

Though of getting a free dog that needs a home instead? It really really annoys me when people are willing to pay £££ for a breed - when there are 100s being killed when they could be loyal and protective pets.

I dont understand why people are breeding dogs into the Island right now with the problem as it is that said if there is a litter due and you want a German Shepard this has come at the right tme for you.

But breeding when the island is in the situation with dogs as it is and one litter after the other as in message 10 is irresponsible or is it making cash for the owners ? coz maybe its all about money as usual

You could even foster a dog for a couple of months..... http://rescueuskyrenia.hyperboards.com/index.php?action=view_topic&topic_id=98

Probably most of you won't agree but I'm all for responsible breeding. My view being that local owners might value the dog more because it *has a value* ie they paid good money for it. And there certainly isn't anything wrong with responsible breeding, producing healthy puppies whose traits you can be sure of through their genetic line. Yes there are a lot of strays that need homes, but raising the status of dogs in Cyprus through responsible breeding will indirectly help them all in the long run as more people decide to adopt dogs. It's my own view that all cross-breeds should be spayed/neutered and only those dogs who can improve their breed be mated with a view to producing healthy puppies which will help create a pet-loving society out here. Breeding costs money, £300 sounds like a great price for a GSD provided it's well-bred and healthy. I might even try to convince my dad to enquire about the new litter

I am all for pedigree dogs I have one BUT it the situation is different out there especailly if they are being 'farmed' ie 2 litters in seven months ??? it is too much for the island to cope with then some poor soul like Lilli or Daisy or KAR are expected to pick up the peices when owners get fed

Having purchased a puppy 7 months ago - let's say the puppy is 2 months old at the time it left it's mum - that's 9-10 months between litters. And then of course who is to say they're even from the same dam? I know exactly what the situation is like out there, I'm Cypriot. What I'm saying is anything that encourages other Cypriots to love dogs (and we all know that the "prestige" of a pedigree dog does just that) can only be a good thing. Also, we're talking about a family member that could be around 20+ years. Surely people have a right to choose a pedigree if they want? OK there's a dog over-population problem, but that shouldn't mean we condemn responsible breeders.

But the main point I was trying to make was if a Cypriot family paid £300 for a dog they would be more likely to look after it than let's say my next-door-neighbour who was given a labrador cross and keeps it tied-up without human contact 24/7.

The reality we have to face is that a lot of Cypriots continue to view dogs as vermin - the view being they live on the streets and are unclean and unworthy of being pets. Having packs of dogs on the streets (that in some cases can be dangerous) isn't helping. Breeding pedigree, healthy puppies might actually convince people that they are not and then maybe we can hope dog number 2 and even 3 comes from KAR. Just like KAR's neuter and return program - which doesn't deal with current numbers of stray dogs but does help to stop them increasing in number - helps only in the long-term; responsible breeding does too. I think anything that encourages Cypriots to value animals can only be a good thing.

AllyTT,

l most certainly agree with your comments .

As to when you pay for something you look after it better

Are we forgetting in this case all the dogs at the RSPCA unwanted and 'dumped'!!! We are still paying for Full breeds back there.

Just because they do not roam the streets and are unseen. The dogs which roam the streets though of TRNC are tagged.

Stop abondening them and we'll have no more strays .

Cost alot of money, keeps the wife happy,no need alot of food,no need a kennel, corner of your pillow is more then enough, they make enough noise and you havent got a garden full of dog poo to clean evrey day.
