My husband has gone to Larnaca today and he has twice pulled up at border controls for insurance cover and they refused and waved him on at both checkpoiints.

Has this happened to anyone else before?

Will it cause problems for him coming back?

They are Greek Cypriots NOT GREEKS (most of them).

Big problem if he has an uninsured accident I should think!

Hildy, I'm slightly confused by what you say. At the metehan crossing, if that's the one you're talking about, the person on the GC side who checks your documents is about a dozen yards or so from the insurance kiosks. If you attempt to stop there, you will be waved on, as you are expected to park further down the road and, if necessary, walk back. If having been waved through, you decide to drive past the insurance offices, there is nothing to stop you. However, you won't have any valid insurance.

He stopped at both. We went across last month and our documents were checked by the second one. But then we had EU cover so we were covered, this is the first time he has tried to go across and buy insurance. He said he got out of the car and took all of his documents into both offices and told them he wanted insuance and he still waved him on/away.

You may have been waved to get tax exemption. You need this before you can get insurance, but they all speak English at the border so you should have queried his response.

They only asked him where he lived and where he was going - he told them TRNC and going to pick up his daughter - they give him his papers back and sent him on his way at both offices.

Hildy;

You must have Greek Cypriot MOT, this is free of charge and obtainable only on weekdays from cabin next to Police.

Then you go to one of the kiosks and purchase insurance.

Unless you're just explaining things badly, hubbie was swanning around with no MOT and no insurance.

Not good.

Don't drive through the British Sovereign base areas with no insurance. You will be prosecuted for driving without insurance. I think they must have numberplate recognition cameras at the border. 2 people that I know of didn't realise that insurance had run out & the police were waiting for them.

Some times when you pull up to provide your insurance documents to the customs officer they will wave you through because they ae just using their judgemnt and pay you the complement of assuming you have the correct insurance.

This happens a lot and will not cause any problems on returning North.

Re Msg No. 9: Correct, they have and they use it. Traffic laws in the SBA area are not necessarily the same as in the Greek Cypriot sector, more like UK regs. More strict.

He has/had all the required documents. He has just driven from the UK to TRNC. He has 30 years experience driving in the UK and abroad with his work in the UK and with the British Army (MOD). He has an Army ID card due to his job within the MOD.

So when he encounters this kind of situation he knows there is something wrong - but everyone just kept waviing him through. As he was going back the following week to take the family back, he went to the border during the week just for the insurance and got it.

Re : Msg 13,

Who are you talking about?

I do not know of a single person who has failed to obtain insurance with the insurance office being open. First time or not. With or without any knowledge of English or Greek. Let alone somebody with MOD credential and experience abroad.

All he had to do is to park his car at the insurance parking area about 20 m away , extract himself from the car, walk into the office with the sign INSURANCE in English (!) in BIG letters and get it. Or is it too taxing for a brilliant military mind?

I have never heard of an insurance company refusing business. Did he actually go up to a kiosk of one of the insurance companies and ask for insurance? , because that is what you have to do.
