Apparently if you can answer three or more of these questions Yes, then you are Posh (just like me )

2. Do you have a cleaner

3. Do you wear clothing brands such as Hackett or Barbour

4. Do you have an interest in horses/sailing

5. Do you spend over £10 on a bottle of wine

6. Do you still tell people what school you went to even though you are in your 30's

7. Do you shop at Waitrose

8. Do you say 'supper' instead of dinner

9. Do you greet people with a kiss on both cheeks

10.Do you have an Aga

11. Do you drink Earl Grey / specialist Teas

12. Do you know what Prosecco is

13. Do you eat Hummus

Probably questions 5 - if you eat out anywhere here - 9 - 11 and 13 apply to most Turkish Cypriots, so we fit in well!

Even though I can give 3 positive answers I think I'd still rather claim to be common - as down to earth as they come and proud of it, that's me!

In case you're wondering which 3 I scored points on:

6 - still able to tell people which schools I went to, yes but probably only cos I'm not yet too old to have forgotten!

9 - kiss on both cheeks, yes but only only since I arrived here and I've a sneaky feeling that's cos the people I'm now mixing with think it must be the thing to do! Where I come from it's one kiss on the cheek and just throw you arms around each other for a lovely big hug. Is the two cheek thing a Turkish norm cos all my Turkish Cypriot friends do the two cheeks too.

13 - hummus - the only definite yes I think I can hold my hands up to!! Therefore, definitely common!

Rowlo, if you lived in a studio, or bedsit, then that would really be posh.

Re : Msg 35,

Dear Jeannie,

congratulations! Just one mistake in your tarama...

Referring you to my message 13: it is really common to say "I am posh". One never says it, one just knows.

Upper class people never use this word. They say : "They are our people".

Love,

Clarissa

"as down to earth as they come and proud of it, that's me!"

This phrase could just as easily be uttered by many a 'toff'...

I've known many people from upper-class backgrounds who's like to think or regard themselves 'down to earth'. I've certinaly met plenty who wore the most raggedy old clothes for huntin' shootin' and fishin' and were too careful with their money to buy new just because their old ones were looking past their best.... Often patched elbows and darned socks were in evidence

They certainly didn't ponce around the 'family estate' with brushed suede shoes, highly polished brogues and brand-new hacking jackets over mole-skin troos.

Where the posh snobbery comes in is the middle-classes with aspirations to upper-class status... that's where one gets the pretensions of designer labels and all that they betray. Nice clothes are OK, fashion victim? Not OK.. They stand out a mile as definitely aspirational 'posh' which ironically is very far fro

P.S.

Posh people walk their own dogs... they don't have flunkies, they may well have staff to help them run their busy lives but never so that they can merely do nothing for themselves. Old money doesn't thrive on a feckless lack of activity.

Going back to the original list, I would have thought that most people living in North Cyprus would have done 9 and 13 as a matter of course. Just a matter of finding number 3.
