Hi John, Actually the weather is effecting the temperature of your laptop but this is not really related with the model or age of laptop. During time the fan of your laptops are being full with dust and the fan is not working efficiently. Because of this reason we are using extra coolers. If we clean our laptops fans (by using vacuum cleaner ) then our laptops will work better. just a suggestion!

Make sure you buy one big enough for your laptop, lots of them say up to 17" but if you read the feedback they are not big enough... so check it out before you come all the way back only to find it doesn't suffice. Also as they mostly run off the USB for its power your laptop will not last so long on a charge... just be aware.

Good points Groucho I have one, but find it more effective to raise the laptop from the desk and to play a standard fan over it. Monitor the temperatures with a programme like Speedfan.

Unsure why these are needed. I have run various makes of lap-tops through nine summers in the UAE and have never had any shutdown because of an overheat.

If it's not USB then is a bit naff, as it means you need an adjacent power supply which defeats part of the idea of laptops.. So for adaptability I'd avoid those. The best coolers do help the user to carry on working with the laptop on their lap when it would otherwise get very warm and uncomfortable so they are quite a good idea for both the machine and the man.. (or woman).
