Are currently watching the Pope's service on TV from Cyprus. My wife who is a Maronite, has commented on how FEW people there are at the service, yet Lebanese TV has pointed out that there are a lot of Lebanese there including the Maronite Patriach. Also to rub salt into the GC wounds, the last hymn has just been sung in ................Arabic!! Yet the GC's have opposed the Pope of visiting the NORTH!!

If the Pope chooses popularity over stewardship of his flock then he's no Pope worthy of the name...

As leader of the Catholic church the Pope should not have been advised to visit just one side of a divided island, politics and religion should be kept separate.

As leader of the Catholic Church what is he doing visiting the ROC which is Greek Orthodox? He should have visited The Lebanon, maybe also Israel to try and get them to lift the embargo on Gaza - but NOT EITHER SIDE OF CYPRUS. Geoff Agnostic, of Famagusta City

There appears to be three issues that when mentioned on this board bring out the worst in people. Typically lead by those ignorant of facts but abundant with their own opinions. Thus providing the rest of us with a thread to read of venom, rubbish and a deluge of wine soaked hypothesis. Religion BRS KAR

The Pope visited ROC as a head of state, and as such could not have visited TRNC because of its (unfairly) unrecognised status. A friend went to the Mass this morning in Nicosia and tells me that there were about 20,000 in the stadium and as many again outside watching on screens. Not bad for a non-catholic country.

Sal, How do you come to the conclusion that wine has anything to do with peoples' opinions on the Pope.. There are Christians of many persuasions in the TRNC including Roman Catholics, why should the Pope not see fit to pay a visit to them as part of his ministry? I guess he's being advised but really the politics of the island should not prevent him visiting members of his flock.

Agree fully with that Groucho, perhaps Catholics in TRNC don't need the spiritual guidance that those in the South require. Or is this just another example of the discrimination shown to people living here.

thanks groucho. i am catholic and in my opinion, every country in the world is drawn together by the people who live within and accept its cultural heritage and can live together in harmony and respect each others cultural differences. if there was one catholic in the trnc, it should have been worth the pope visiting. he is the head of our church.................politics???

Pope Benedict XVI is the Head of State for the Vatican City. Vatican City State is governed as an absolute monarchy. The Pope holds full legislative, executive and judicial powers. Therefore he cannot step outside politics. It is arrogant to proclaim one's Catholicism as being an argument for the Pope to visit all Roman Catholics wherever they choose to live. For the self same reasoning HRH Queen Elizabeth II head of the Anglican faith (Catholic) does not visit her parishioners in Zimbabwe. It is not politically conducive for maintaining cordiality.

Sal1262 Who do you think you are to take the attitude as in Message 10, I am entitled to my opinion, as is Groucho or anyone else for that matter, you are an extremely rude and offensive person, in my opinion of course. The Pope should have visited all of his flock, irrespective of which side of the island they live on, he may not recognise TRNC but presumably God does and is he not supposed to be his representative on earth. Just for your information, not that it is any of your business, but I have not been drinking and am capable of thinking for myself when stone cold sober, by the way, who do you think we are, that would be interesting to know.

| I refer the Horrible member to the answer I gave some moments ago. "There appears to be three issues that when mentioned on this board bring out the worst in people.
