The survey, by insurance company LV, found that one in 3.8 passengers who have travelled with BA over the past five years have had their luggage lost, damaged or delayed.

British Airways responded to the results of the study, saying that they were "complete rubbish".

The survey of 2,007 passengers found that Virgin Atlantic was the next worst, with one in 8.3 passengers experiencing problems with their luggage.

Dubai-based airline Emirates was third with one in nine passengers having luggage woes. Easyjet was fourth with one in 11.1 and Ryanair fifth with one in 12.5 having issues.

The survey found that overall 29% of UK air passengers have experienced problems with their baggage over the last five years.

A BA spokesperson said: "There is absolutely no evidence to suggest that a quarter of BA passengers have experienced lost or delayed baggage over the last five years."

She added that the airline's baggage performance had "dramatically" improved since the huge problem

Er, when we moved over here two years ago and flew BA they lost 5 of our 6 bags, but do have to say it was the time when terminal 5 was just up and running and we did manage to get our lost bags after a couple of days.

Hi folks,

The figure of 1 in 3.8 passengers suffering lost, delayed or damaged bags seems ludicrously high. The industry average is 0.003 bags are lost or have missed a flight (they may turn up later) So why BA should go from 3/1000 to 1/4 just does not make sense. I work in the baggage department of an airport (not airline) and any statistic like that would see wholesale sackings in any airline.

The difference between BA, Virgin, and Emirates versus Easyjet and Ryanair is easily explained. Both Ryanair and Easyjet are 'point to point' airlines. This means that passengers making more than one flight must collect their bags and recheck them in the airport where they a passing through. The likes of BA who are 'full service' airlines frequently deal with onwards connections and will therfore handle transfer bags. Unfortunately, it is the transfer bags that are most likely to miss the connection.

Heathrow (LHR), Paris CDG, and Madrid Barajas (MAD) are the leading airports in Europe for bags failing to make connections.

I always advise people making connecting flights to take the following precautions;

1. Pack an emergency supply of everything in your hand luggage (clothes, medecines, etc);

2. For parties of two or more mix your belongings between bags (eg. half of his in one, half of hers in the other).

3. Always mark your bags in a discrete but obvious way. Brigthly coloured wool, ribbon or string works well.

4. Always fill in the details window of the bag with at very least your name and contact phone number including your country code (UK 0044...).

I hope this is of some help.
