Took some family up to Bellapais to visit the Abbey today. Whilst they were touring the Abbey, my partner and I went into the Kybele Restaurant nextdoor and ordered a small draught beer and a small shandy. On leaving, we were presented with a bill for 13 lira! I questioned the bill, but they said not only was it correct, but they also told me that for another half a lira I could have had a large beer! They are clearly ripping the tourists off and they should be ashamed of themselves. Things like this put tourists off from coming to this lovely island and they go home to spread the bad news.

You paid £6.50 for two drinks in a restaurant in the most beautiful of places in Northern Cyprus and you are complaining that you got ripped off. Was you expecting prices similar to that of Lemar. I cant believe some people, what was you expecting to pay 11tl

Kybele has always been a great restaurant. Good food and the bottom line after a meal with drinks has always been reasonable. Find a better view and better service for what I make £5.65, I don't think so.

I am appalled that you apparently think its ok to rip people off and charge whatever they like. This part of the island needs tourists like people need oxygen and with prices like that they will fail to get them. You with your smug acceptance of any price whatsoever will do this place no good at all. Cost of two small drinks is higher than anywhere else than I can imagine and that includes many more famous places in different parts of the world. Lets hope your blase attitude towards prices helps this islands economy go from strength to strength.

A question for you, how much rent do you think they pay ?? £1000, £1500, £2000 a month plus all the other bollox expenses they have to pay, sadly if you want cheap beer dont expect to get it in Bellapais, the over heads of the businesses here are silly, even for Cyps, this is not a statement but a fact and you are right we need tourists, but the truth be told, location, location, location, go to Windows or one of your local Bars for a cheap Beer.

You can get a cheap beer in Bellapais but its further up in the village at the little bar on the corner

I dont mean to be disrespectful, but get real Charlotte

Sat here in wet and windy Wigan.

Every news programme talks about "Cuts" we all have to face over the next decade or so.

I wish I was sat in the Kybele right now I would gladly pay £13 for a couple of drinks, great views, fabulous friendly setting.

I am out on the 18th with my family and one of the first places we will visit is Bellapais we all love the place.

keep posting

keep smiling

Might have been advisable to have a look at the menu/bar prices before buying. You can always walk away.

If you really feel that you were ripped off when you were able to sit and have a drink in such lovely surroundings, maybe next time you should go to the supermarket, buy a take-out and drink it by the side of the road !!

I am sure that the owner of Kybele will now be able to retire on the profit made on your two (small) drinks.

If this is your only gripe in life then you are a lucky man.

Never heard anything so rediculous, and Marcos has it spot on. Places like the harbour and bellapais have huge outgoings and overheads to cover. Pop down your local bar and get a couple of beers for 7tl or go and sit in the outstanding surroundings of Bellapais and enjoy your drinks for 13tl - just over a fiver!

If you drink in the west end of London you will pay THREE TIMES what you would pay at a pub in the supperbs. That's life...

Msg 13 Paul - spot on. You can get 6 bottles of efes from Lemar for the same price and then sit in the car park drinking them!

The point is, two half pint DRAUGHT beers, one being a shandy, probably a few splashes out of a 1LT plastic bottle, for 13TL? Far too expensive. If their overheads are so high the establishment should make it reasonable enough for customers to want to stay and while away the afternoon in bliss, spending lots of dosh!

The Kybelle is never short of paying customers - all of which realise that to be in those surroundings you pay that bit more.

The point is Brinsley that this sort of price difference is the same all over the world. Depending on where you are, how much the establishment costs to run, how popular it is, will have an impact on how much you pay for a beer. Roxan's in the town charge 10tl for a small 33cl bottle of Efes... don't like it then don't drink there. But people do pay it because it's the place to be on a weekend night out about the town.

As we said - buy your beer in Lemar and sit on a bench if you want it cheap!!

I paid £4.40 for a pint of bitter and a small orange in Morecambe at the weekend. I would much rather have paid and had my drink in the beautiful surroundings of Bellapais. As everyone says, if you want a cheap drink buy from the supermarket or sit in a back street bar. I must admit it was abit naughty not to have said a large beer was available for slightly more.

I am sure the prices would have been shown on the menu and if not then customers should ask before committing themselves.

Msg 17

And I thought the North was cheap! My 'posh' local in Bristol would have been, £2.30 for a pint of Courage best (real ale) and £1.50 for a Britvic orange, making £3.80! No wonder there are so many Northerners in the TRNC!

A whole £1.70 cheaper to drink in a boozer in 'Brizzle' rather than the delights and views of Bellapais. Sounds like a bargain to me - NOT

msg 19. I think North is still quite cheap Richard. I can get bitter as little as £1.50 in a working mens club, its the same every where, it depends where you go.

I have to be invited by a member! Not so long ago in the TRNC no matter where one went, there was very little price differential in licensed outlets for drinks, so no one asked. What a reflection on this place to have to now ask what the tariff is before settling down for a session!

I have to say it boils down to the type of people that have come to the island some with class and some without. If expect to go to any tourist resort around the world and pay less then £6 for two drinks then you should really stay at home. The cheap beer brigade is not what we are looking for in Northern Cyprus. I think the south would be a better choice but then you wouldnt have got the villa as cheap. Sorry you cant have it all.

While I agree about the price thing, please dont make out that what you are willing to pay for a drink defines whether you have class or not.

I know people who have very little money and will query prices, but have class ,and people who have 'loadsamoney'and barely look at a bill, who are pigs.

Cant belive that peoplecan be so picky,

I bought a G&T and half a Guiness £8.25 and that was a pub in skeggy bank holiday weekend, the price is what the price is live with it.

The only way to show you are not satisfied, if thats the case, dont go back, end of

I am sure Genguis will not lose to much sleep over it, or be to upset to carry on

Just returned from Paris yesterday - little street bar to side of Hilton. Small draft beer = EUR13. Now of course this is ridiculous, but come on, £5.65 for 2 drinks in one of the finest locations in Cyprus - this is NOT expensive - why do some people always have their glasses half empty about TRNC (excuse the pun !)
