Best of luck to you...I quit many years ago...and because I am a stubborn old sod, that had decided that I no longer smoked, my mind set to that condition.

Persevere, believe me it is worth it!!!

I had a heart attack in October 2001. I hadn't smoked for many many years. But smoking contributed to the attack...It kinda brings it home???

Good luck to you Chris. I came back from the UK last week after my annual visit having smoked less than half my normal daily amount mainly due to the fact that family I stayed with dont smoke and a walk outside was needed to fulfil my cravings. Was convinced I could keep it up here especially as was not really enjoying the damn things!!! But back almost one week and back to full quota, cant even blame it on going out and socialising as have not been. Admire anyone who gives up the dreaded weed and wish I had more willpower. Have given up in the past and the first few weeks hardest, really hope you succeed.

Why torture yourself? The patches really helped me. It gets you over the habit of lighting up and I only needed them for two weeks.

Smoking was great when everyone did it but nowadays you are treated like an outcast. I really enjoyed a cigarette after a meal or with a drink, but now I see people standing outside pubs in the UK in the freezing cold and wonder how they can possibly be enjoying it.

Good Luck Chris - I gave up 22 years ago - one Friday evening I smoked 40 John Player Special one after the other - even two at a time!! I thought if I made myself really ill and disgusted with myself I'd never smoke again - it worked. For three months after that I put the money I used to spend on smoking and bought myself a few treats - I couldn't believe how much money I'd wasted. Don't give in to the craving - you are stronger than nicotene any day!!

Chris

I gave up just over 2 years ago after a very minor MI having smoked for over 25 years. First couple of weeks were difficult but after that it became much easier and after a month the cravings had all but disappeared. Still get the odd one now and again but easy to deal with. Support of your family is extremely important. Stick with it as the benefits are almost instantaneous with lowered blood pressure and better sense of smell/taste to name but two. Food has never tasted so good and whilst i have put on about a stone in weight I feel better than I have in years. Another benefit is that after a couple of years as a 'non-smoker' you really see a difference in any insurance premiums !!

Very best of luck to you.

nurseawful, blinking well done you for making that decission even though you were 'forced' by circumstances!

As you know I am an avid hatter of smoking as its claimed several of my close family who I nursed, it does break the one hearts watching a loved one die, when it can be avoided.

So my heart felt wishes to you, think of your young children, not that puff! ...... Go for it gal..... x

I did cold turkey just over 7 years ago. The first 6 weeks were bad but it DOES get better.

The health benefits were immediate and I seemed to have so much money left I did not know what to do with it.

Stick with it, its worth it!

First 4-6 weeks are the hardest. Once you get past that it deffo gets easier. Go out with your non-smoking mates for a bit. I always found it harder when i was with smokers and much, much easier when with non-smoking friends.

I find there's just as many people, if not more, that don't smoke nowadays.

Check out this picture of a smokers body - slightly comical, but slightly scary as well!!

It will be a while before it gets easier. People smoke for different reasons therefore the detox and quitting will be different as well. After the physiological addiction is over, you will still have to deal with the psychological addiction. I think this is where people are unprepared usually and why they start again. Identifying and acknowledging your triggers/habits will help you stay the course. For now, you must tell those around you to please put up with your moodiness. (It can be similar to accepting a death and stages of grief/acceptance.) You are going to get constipated - ugg. Step up your fiber intake for sure and water consumption. You are going to cough up phlegm, feel very irritable, fatigued and depressed. If you rewarded yourself with a cigarette in the morning when you awoke, getting out of bed is going to be a bi$ch. Quickly come up with another routine. Look at smoking cessation websites and feel like you are a part of a team. You might not mind letting yourself down

con't

but you won't let your teammates down. You will also find great information as to how your body is mending and repairing and that is very rewarding! Already in a few weeks, the cilia starts repairing and growing inside your lungs and you will have fewer infections and your energy level will shoot up.

Anyway, I wouldn't mind it if you needed to call anytime to vent. You give SO MUCH to others. Be selfish now and take care of yourself. Screw everybody else for a couple of months. You can do it girl!

Chris

So you won't be joining my new club, 'Smokers unanimous; so when you don't feel like a smoke, you phone me up and I'll talk you into it'!

The slight whiff of black tobacco whilst sipping your first black espresso of the day, hearing the quiet crackling of the fresh burning leaves as you inhale deeply feeling an instant calm and relaxation making the forth coming day easy to confront, waiting until noon when the first ice cold gin & tonic touches your parched lips and feel an irresistible need to reach for a smooth relaxing cigarette. Can you resist?!

Fell by the way side tonight went to Zeki's bar and got verbally abused by a customer who rides a quad bike who incidentally, I have never seen in my life before , he wound me up so

much I had a cigarette or 2 For the record asked me why I was laughing at him! (arrogant SOB didn't even look at him)

Left shortly after with my daughter-in-law and her Thai friend.

Nothing worse than a 'man' or so called , that only has time for bullying women!!

Chris

p.s. Message to H. owner of Zekis get your house in order or you are going to loose a lot of customers.

Good luck with it Chris and stick with it. I'm lucky I've never smoked but I've seen my husband try to give up so many times only to go back on the cigs and end up diappointed in himself. You can do it and you know we're all here supporting you. As for the comment about smokers smelling like old ashtrays, what a load of old claptrap - I would soon tell my husband if he did. No doubt folk think I'm bad as I always pong of garlic Keep up the good work and if you want any NRT brought back from UK let me know as a trip back is imminent.

Blimey Chris, we sat just in front of you at Zeki's and I joked with you about the cigarettes. I must have totally missed that. Next think I knew you had gone and tables were being moved around. I did see the big quad bike in the car park but have no idea of who you are talking about. I am really sad that this happened to you of all people, you are well liked and loved by the people around you. Chin up girl xoxo

Chris I know who you mean, at the moment there are 2 of them riding around on quads and old enough to know better! We've tried Zeki's a couple of times, but they always seem to be in there and if they're not being loud and arrogant, then they are usually being rude to someone. I would not waste your time worrying about it, you did the right thing walking away x

Sadly Chris that person will still be as arrogant even after you had a ciggie, if the idiots get their pleasure out of running around on big boys toys then they should be pitied, and if that bar encourages that type of customer then they will pay the price in the end but you must NOT let them get to you. I smoked for 45 years and packed it in so I'm sure you can do it too, hang on in there.

I stopped 7 months ago using the new drug Champix which actually made it easy. I have had no withdrawal symptoms or craving at all.

http://www.champixinfo.co.uk/

I don't know if Champix is available in NC but if it is I can recommend it.

I am really glad to be a non smoker now.

Alternative, try the patches. Stick em over your eyes so you can't find your fags. LOL

The best peice of advice I was ever given was this -

In order to stop smoking you need to change the way that you think about stopping !!!! People always say 'I have given up' that makes it sound like you are missing something .... like being on a diet and always fancying a donut - just the same ....you feel you are missing out on something ....the advice I was given was this change your mindset to -

I have GOT RID of ........... a filfthy habit ..... coughing my guts up in the morning.....wasting 6 tl on every packet ( 18tl a day in my case ) ......... stinking like a dirty old ash tray

etc etc etc

ANd also why go cold turkey - there are things to help make this easier - use them - patches etc

I found this really helped as when I stopped I felt that I had got rid of something nasty rather than missing out on something good - and we all know smoking is not good!!!

Hope this helps someone !!!! I used to smoke 3 packets a day !!!!!

If all else fails try a little aversion therapy...

Watch someone smoking and as they draw the smoke in just imagine the foul stinking smell hitting their lungs and all the damage it's doing.... remember your X-ray and know it's a mug's game.

Then take a breath of fresh air and see how good it feels...

No contest.

keep it up - I did it years ago and it was worth it!

Get the jar for your money - that works and buy yourself a treat

Also - do something with your mouth (now!! now!! - stop it!!!)

I found sucking polo's great and I still have mints in my bags, desk drawer etc they do not put weight on.

There is loads of fruit and veg here so eat sticks of raw carrots if you like them the cherries are very cheap and fruit and veg avoids putting on weight.

Good Luck!

Welll done giving up! Think of the money you will save, as well as the health benefits. The prat with the quad probably can't balance and ride a proper motor bike with two wheels!!

I tried for 1 month about 20 years ago, when still at work. Used the strongest patches, but they didn't help a jot for me, so I stopped using them. Sorry to say that it didn't get better for me & in the end I gave up giving up.

I found the main bad time was not when I was at work, strangely enough, or after a meal, but on Sunday when I totally relaxed & stting down, having a cup of coffee.

Are the patches better now than they were then? Are there any other things that help. I used something called "stoppers" on my last airline flight in 2004 & they were very good, but they do not seem to be available here? They were/are tiny tablets, that you put under your tongue, but were purchased in the UK. in early 2000s or even late 90s & I have lost them now. Are they still available in the UK.??

I remember "stoppers" they were great, after dissolving one under your tongue you felt like you had smoked about 20 fags!

I gave up using a book by Allen Carr "The Easyway to stop smoking". This really does work! I've been off the fags for 9 months and feel so much better for it healthwise and in my pocket!

I also read the Alan Carr book & agree it is a "must read" before starting to give up. It dispels all the myths about why we smoke & it's not because we enjoy it.

So are stoppers still available out there.............. anyone in the UK?

I'm a lost cause & have smoked now for 50 years, with only a 1 month break, trying to stop + 1 other week when I had real flu. Sadly, I don't think that rolling your own helps either.

haven't read all the posts. Hope you don't turn into an anti-smoking nazi like a lot of ex smokers seem to do. I was having lunch today (outside) and the woman on the next table kept giving me evils for smoking.

Us smokers can't win, we can't smoke inside and are frowned upon when we smoke in the outside area. If you don't like us smoking outside go into the air con'd area inside..........

Mike - we smokers are damned if we do and damned if we don't.

As I have said on here before, we have pubs here in Bury St Edmunds where they've allocated the gardens as "no smoking" areas. You can't win!

Us 'lepers' have to go outside in the winter but when the decent weather arrives, we're not allowed to smoke outside either!

I gave us smoking for 2 years and put on so much weight that I started again. A very silly move on my part, certainly, but can't there be a little 'live and let live'?

By the way, huge congratulations to those who have stopped and 'stayed stopped' - well done

Warm regards.

I take it that it's now, quite a lot longer? Keep it up.

If it's any consolation, smoking is apparently harder to give up than heroin, so congratulations to all you troopers out there who have cracked it. Other smokers may feel threatened by your giving up so won't necessarily be the most supportive people. Smoking is a cunning addiction because, unlike drinking you do not visibly change as you are satisfying your craving (well not in the short term, anyway). However you are ten times more likely to die from smoking-related illnesses than alcohol-related illnesses if you drink, if that makes sense. Also I found out very recently that 85% of toxic poisonous smoke is both odourless and invisible, which means that when you are with people who are smoking, what you can see or smell is only one seventh of what is actually polluting the atmosphere. Scary, isn't it.

Had my last cigarette on April 9th. I'll be honest it's really hard..still.

But these are some of the things that stop me from picking one up again.

That whole thing of trying to find a place to have that quick drag before you get in the car,

the leaving everyone round the table while you pop out for a quick smoke,

wondering how badly you stink when you sit down again.

Going in to someones house (who doesnt smoke) and wondering if your clothes smell..you know they do but you hope they cant smell it.

Smoking at an outside table, seeing your smoke drift over some non smokers or someone eating and telling yourself its ok Im in NC, they know its going to happen here, to try and kid yourself it ok.

Can any ex smokers carry on the list. Not ever smoked people not invited!!! They havent got a clue how hard it is!

I have failed miserably no body to blame but myself. (as spider knows)

When in the hospital and 3 days after that not a problem!

I have cut it down to half of what I used to smoke but still not good enough. In my defence I will say that instead of analgesia I have taken a cigarette and it helped the pain!

Dont blame you Chris. I loved my fags, loved smoking and know how hard it is to give up. Give it a go another time.

Its like coming out of a bad relationship. Everyone can give advice, everyone can tell you its bad for you and not to do it, but until the day YOU wake up one morning and think I dont want to do this anymore....

Never give up on giving up.

Don't beat yourself up Chris, you've had a difficult time of late so it' s natural that you weakened. Get yourself well first then try again, you can do it but you have to be able to give it your best shot.

With all this encouragement for people to give up smoking, I think I might start and then stop again just to see if I can do it! )

Bill - don't even think about it

Agree with some others - it's all a question of being in the right 'mind set'. It's bloody hard though; not necessarily to actually do it, but to stick with it.

I speak from experience

Try again, Chris - when you're ready.

Just keep possitivly reassuring your self.

I've been smoke free for over 5 years now. And it gets easier, and much better every single second. Just feel your body getting healthier in every second that goes by. And keep repeating to your self. I am smoke free, I am getting healthier and healthier. It takes almost 10 years for your body to nearly fully repair the damage caused by smoking. . By that time you will be gratefull you made such an amazing choice. Also the best way to be free of an old habit, is to start a new one. Take up walking or jogging. I wish you the best!
