Crime is on the up. Probably a good thing you haven't got a PC or it may have been stolen by now. The most worrying statistic is that you are over twice as likely to die a violent death in the TRNC as opposed to the UK (mainly due to traffic collisions) but death is death !!

I hope crime isn't as bad as you have stated. Both my partner (Turkish Cypriot) and myself have put a deposit down on a property and within the next year (all being well) hope to be living in Famagusta, in the same area as his family. We heard of occasional burglaries (happens everywhere unfortunately) but I am surprised about the statistics regarding road accidents. If anything we noticed less traffic, less road rage, great parking (usually under the nearest tree) and much more respect and consideration on the roads than you get in the UK. The lighting at night isn't too good on the roads, but on the whole (and we have been to TRNC on quite a few occasions) we have found driving around to be virtually stress free.

Per head of population violent crime affects very few, it is so-called petty crime that is more important to our every day lives as it affects the way we relate to, and trust, other people. So the traffic accident rate is high here - look at the names of the majority of people killed or badly injured, they are generally Turkish/T.C., not European - but crime to the person, burglary, rape, muggings, stabbing, aggressive yob culture, car theft, etc etc, is thankfully not part of every day TRNC life. Unfortunately, with this ridiculous over-taxing and price hikes, poverty will start to affect more people and there may be an a upturn in 'petty' crime rates. This is certainly not only relevant to the TRNC, but other countries with problems. I know where I would rather be.
