Its a mental defence mechanism. By saying it like it is, we are shattering dreams, bursting bubbles and in some cases even fantasy's. Much easier to blame everyone else than face facts.

One of the problems with telling people about the pitfalls, is that there is always someone like Rowlo who will ignore all the problems like PTP, deeds, mortgages, poor workmanship and unfinished builds and instead blame people for not doing their homework. This gives people a false sense of security as they then think that there is actually something that they can do to protect their property/money. There isn't. The legal system is open to abuse and its more of a case of "There but the Grace of God go I" I really would like someone to come on this forum and tell me how i can buy with complete safety. Any offers Rowlo?

rowlo there is degree of getting your fingers burnt. The reason for the cheap property, and it isnt that cheap now compared to Spain,Turkey or Bulgaria, was because of exchange land ,and because one day you might lose property in a court case or settlement, Will still have to pay comp, so thats another reason. Then there was the no direct flights. Weighed up , decision made and money put aside for comp. Anything else has nothing to do with cheap property ,its to do with an exploitative system. The frauds would have taken place if the houses were £50k or £200k. Funny, the people who knew about all the risks with the banks ,legal system and builders ,are so smart now that its in the public domain.I dont remember any of this 'knowledge' being imparted when it could have done some good, and if anyone else tried ,they were 'whingers' Somebody dumps rubbish in my garden thats ok because the property is cheap? How much should villa cost before law protects you. £100k,200,300.

rowlo, I did not buy a cheap property off plan but waited and bought a house when it was finished and all services were connected and roads were in. We paid in full a lump sum before the keys were handed over, this did not stop the developer mortgaging our property as we discovered when we went to register it. The developer has now paid this mortgage off as promised but we still do not have our deeds after waiting over 4 years. We have ptp and have paid all our taxes but this developer is known to drag his heels when it comes to exchanging title deeds. We did not know this when we bought and with hindsight we should have rented like Spider. We thought we had done everything we could, doing our homework, finding a good independant lawyer before commiting our hard earned money to the TRNC. Unless you have your title deeds nobody is safe and everyone should be demonstrating to have the law changed. Whether it is in the TRNC or the UK. The butlers wife

While i dont agree intirely with Rowlo, he does have a few very valid points, most people saw a chance of a cheap villa in the sun/believed everything the bulider/developer/lawyer/salesman/estateagent said and jumped in without doing any ;proper homework, this is a fact, not make believe or cloud cuckoo, they fell foul of unscrouplous dealers etc etc, but at the end of the day nobody told them they HAD to buy or held a gun to the heads, they BELIEVED what they heard and in many cases it WAS too good to be true, but it happened in Spain / Portugal /France Turkey and many more places and guess whot it will happen again and again cos people will not wise up. These people here saw a way to *rob* unwary people and make easy bucks and guess whot IT WORKED cos we all thought they were such nice people, well they aint any better than the scumbags that are robbing people everyday in England for building jobs etc. Just my opinion, and ive come over a few theiving brits here as well

You are missing the point. Thieves are thieves whether in Britain or Cyprus. It's the action we are criticising not the nationality. Also no one is saying that the TRNC is not a great place to live, just that its not the place to buy property and the laws are outdated and discriminatory. Do you think those people (TC and Brit) who have invested all their money in property in Cyprus and have lost everything due to what in most cases can only be described as blatant fraud, really have choices as to where they can now live? Surely this is just a question of what is right and what is wrong?

rowlo. You make a couple of valid points but for some people its too late. By telling people in the UK they are mugs to buy here you are basically sending out the same message about purchasing as those you criticise . You are just coming from a different direction. So whats the problem? Also, regardless of how stupid people have been ,NC has as its only major earner the construction and associated industries, and is ill served by intimating that anyone that buys here deserves to be ripped off. What about those that have purchased with no problem. How about supporting changes and invite people to purchase, instead of mocking those that have purchased, or might have purchased in the future.

We have deeds. Our advocate assured us all would be ok with deeds . I think in North cyprus you will get ripped off by those only if you let them !!!

Pipie, I am genuinely pleased for you. However, IMO, to say that "in North Cyprus you will get ripped off by those only if you let them" is a pretty general statement Did your Vendor / Builder try to rip you off? I think that if you deal with Honest people, you probably won't get ripped off, and if you deal with Villains then you probably will, no matter what your advocate says or does, because they've had a lot of practice, and they've got something to gain, unlike most advocates, who get paid 'Win or Lose' But how do you know, in advance, which are the Honest ones, and which are the Villains? - Without benefit of Hindsight?
