Set up a kiddie pool in the shade.

Provide a wet towel to lie on.

Or set up a fan over a pan of ice!

Does anyone else have any useful ideas?

Not sure if you can get it here, but i always have a friend coming over from the UK bring me a tub of Rock Sulphur.

You put a walnut sized lump into your dogs drinking water...a fresh piece every few days. It helps retain water...I'm told The Police force use it regularly for their working dogs.

Also yoghurt is a great addition to their diet

Admittedly there are a few [only a few!] 'four letter words' in this classic Australian dog lover's song - but if you can ignore them, you'll love it - it's SO touching!

Don't forget to turn the 'Volume' up really loud, so the whole family can hear and appreciate!

One year used to sunbathe on the rocks in a small cove in Karaoglanoglu near to the abandoned cooking oil factory. About every 30 mins a large black dog would scamper down to the sea, swim about for a few minutes then climb back up the rocks to where it came from.

That dog knew how to cool down!

Dusterbruce, my dogs can sniff out a pool at a 10 mile radius....ask Spider...poor old Mr Spider had a hell of a time the next day cleaning it out!! And it sure as hell does NOT make me popular with the neighbours....late at night, the still air of Karsiyaka rings with a resounding splashing noise, closely followed by 'GET OUT OF IT'!! Fortunately i have now got a new unbreakable leash....and have fixed neighbourly relationships!! LOL

DD... that's hysterical... our dog will only sit on the top step of our pool at the moment... Gets her bum wet and then thinks better of it!! ;) Might try the Rock Sulphur thing... and yoghurt/Ayran - I think she'll like that!

A really good thread with some useful ideas - thanks guys! I'm sure my four legged friend will appreciate it too!

I also give mine, ice cubes to play with and as a tasty treat, frozen bones!! I think i would draw the line at leaving the air con all day for them....even if i did have it! I think a fan will suffice.

Carrier bag, you could try simply hosing them down...they may not enjoy it, but it will definitely cool them down....or try a little kid sized paddling pool.

Evaporating water causes cooling (laws of physics) and that's why CAMRA use wet towels draped over beer barrels to cool the beer at events up and down the UK... It works surprisingly well...

We had the same problem with our 2. Apparently they used to be hurled up in the air and into the pool on the Army Camp where they lived. They used to keep away from the sea as well. We were worried that if they fell into the pool they would not know how to get out. So we took them swimming every day last year a couple of widths each. And slowly slowly, they don't keep their distance any more, but would not willingly jump in the pool. But one of them loves it at the beach and loves being in the water and barking at the waves.

So just pick them up and take them into the shallow end and help them to swim a couple of widths and show them how to get out of the pool.

be very careful if you decided to give em a quick hose down which both my dogs love

because the water in the hose is nearly scalding at the moment let it run for minute to cool

put run off on garden or use later

ps i know your not supposed to but dont see why dogs cant have a shower

outside shower for pool chlorine are a good idea as well just drag your dog under with you

Brucellosis, Campylobacter, Cryptospoidiosis, Ehrlichosis, Hydatid disease (echinococcus), Leptospirosis, Listeriosis, Ringworm, Toxocariasis and Yersiniosis, to name a few, can be spread from dog to humans who share swimming water.

Now 'lynch' me for warning you!

Just out of interest...what sort of diseases can you contract from human urine, and human poo....not mention, spit and vomit......ALL of which are more likely to be found floating in the shallow waters of a beach....

What about chlorine? Doesn't that kill off most life threatening germs.....I have swum with dogs all my life...and never got so much as a sneeze.....

Not so up to date on all the diseases you mention Tenak, and i do find it all quite interesting...the only one i do know about, is ringworm, (i used to work on farms, and have had ringworm twice...just a little rash that goes with cream, so i know a little about this) and this can be contracted simply by petting an infected animal...or leaning on a fence that an infected animal has rubbed itself on...but i don't expect anyone would think about such matters walking through the countryside and leaning on a fence to look at the horses running around....

(Not having a go...just interested)

Maybe the Moldovan would prefer to take his/her chances with a dog, rather than any Pommy who would spout such an assertion - my sympathies are with the Moldovan!
