Along near the big Gun monument on the forestry land there are some donkeys, including a newborn one, being cared for after their owner died, the people looking after them are in desperate need of fruit, vegetables, anything along those lines to feed these animals, perhaps you could gather some of your plums and drop them off there. In fact if anyone who can help in this way it would be a great help, water shortage is also a problem so as tesco say, every little helps.

Hatti

I saw them the other day there must be at least 6, and they looked really healthy. Will pop down later as I have some veg and fruit that is going to go off before we get the chance to eat it.

Is that all donkeys eat???

I dont want the donkeys to starve but are fruit and veg really good for them? Would bread not be a better option and some carrots? Water is essential of course. Is there not a group of Brits who are looking after them or have I got that wrong?

I doubt if donkeys in the wild have access to bread but by all means offer it if you have any spare, I was told fruit and veg were needed. Maybe people could buy an extra 19litre bottle of water now and then to help out, what is it, about 4 lira, not a lot to help these beautiful animals.

Water melon is a beutiful fruit and very cheap at moment also very juicy.Save all the skins and take it to them, they'd love it.Just sit there and watch them enjoy.

They love fruit and veg and as already said love whole melons. How many of us just bin our left overs, so when passing just throw it over the gate. A little bit of excitement for the kids as well.

I love this little family of donkeys. We have watched them grow from 3 to 6 over the last couple of years. Had no idea they were fending for themselves so thanks for that. Do you know if their water storage is accessible from the fence?

All I can see is an old bath set back from the gate, as far as I am aware that is the only water supply.

their main diet should be grazing.if thats not available, then they need hay or straw. as the case is in cyprus.in england we bed horses on straw but the chatalkoy riding club feed theirs straw as all the horses do there. too much fruit n not enough forage will make them unwell. equines cant be sick.they get colic

Just a note: No animals should be given bread as it can swell in the stomach and cause unpleasant bloating and upset tummys. As horselover says....grazing is essential for horses, so hay and grass is a must....but they do love their fruits as well....

Cannot one or more of the supermarkets close by be approached to donate their left over fruit and veg? They must have loads, especially in this heat and rather than just chuck it out, it can do to the donkeys. Not sure how to get free hay though but must be a way!

donkeys can be fed small amounts of bread without doing any damage to their digestive system, which, is probably rubbish here anyway. They really need grass and access to water (the most important thing). Who actually owns them now, does anyone know?

The chap who owns them (i was reliably told this afternoon). Got the donkeys for tourists to hire for walks along the beach, however, sadly he died. There is supposed to be someone looking after them now....but not sure who (or if he/she is still alive). They have a large area to run around, and there is supposed to be a trough near the entrance...maybe someone could put a LARGE bucket inside the entrance for passers to fill up? You could perhaps fill up an empty water bottle and when passing fill up the large bucket?

I have a very lovely warm feeling that these donkeys are going to be the best and most well looked after donkeys on the island!!

The supermarkets have been asked for their old veg etc but refused to donate it for reasons not known but we think it is because they sell it too farmers for feeding the livestock pigs, sheep etc which I suppose is fair enough.

Any old baby bath, with a brick or something in it, to stop it tipping over - might be an idea, if anyone has one...........

Please everyone.......as you are passıng.......stop and gıve them something. Just had a lady from KAR here , they know of the sıtuatıon and theres not an awful lot they can do......because they are ın an enclosure wıth really hıgh barbed wıre fencıng around ıt.

There ıs no shelter from the sun and not a bıg enough area for grazing.

If there are any Turkish Cyprıots out there that know of the famıly or the son who ıs supposed to be lookıng after them......can you post contact detaıls for hım and İ'm sure people would help.

Lets keep this posting near to the top.

I would just like to put a few matters straight regarding the Donkeys opposite the Escape monument - these donkeys started off with just two the male and female put in there by the owner of the part built hotel opposite some 5 years ago, they were NEVER intended as beach rides. Over the years the two have had 3 young born and now a grandchild!! with another on the way. The reason they are in the smaller enclosed area is due to the road widening as soon as this is finished we hope to get them back in their larger enclosure - we also have 5 Supermarkets that give us free there leftover fruit and veg and Ercan that looks after them also gives them fresh water everyday.

What we are now looking for are volunteers to help with the Supermarket Sweep as at the moment there are only two of us collecting everyday.
