Christofias may face challenge to strategy Christofias may face challenge to talks strategy Papadopoulos ‘working behind scenes’ to stop him By Andreas Hadjipapas AS THE two leaders prepare for a crucial encounter in a week’s time, there are signs that some Greek Cypriot political forces may openly challenge President Christofias’ decision to move ahead with full-scale negotiations, without "adequate" preparation. A report in yesterday’s Politis claimed that ex-President Tassos Papadopoulos, who has strong reservations about the new process, has been working behind the scenes to avert the launch of new talks. His Diko party is said to be split, with one section openly demanding that the group pull out of the Christofias government. A similar move is said to be going on within socialist Edek, also a coalition partner in the Christofias Cabinet. They argue that going into fully-fledged talks without sufficient progress having been achieved in the working groups, to narrow the gap between the sides on core issues of the Cyprus problem, could prove disastrous for the Greek Cypriots.

Same old same old from the gcs.Without "adequate" preparation. How much clout does Papadpolous have these days.To much according to the way Christofias seems to be behaving. The same reasons where given on May 25th this year. How do they expect to come to a solution if they do not have full scale talks. If all the issues are not ready to come to the table then talk about why they are not ready and thrash them out in a civilised manner, Paul.

mark has recorded lots of very useful stuff on many threads there is a central role for the latest news on talks and deals because of at least the slim chance of an accommodation this time around: which will determine who get's what, to put it crudely mark has also picked up on a lot of "muttering" in the ranks of both parties this suggests that with any green light in july, the momentum will pick up however the gc side always list an end to foreign troops as essential... surely they don't mean the tea, cakes, cucumber sandwiches, and cricket consumed and played in the sovereign zones... nah it's the turkish armed forces innit, love 'em or hate 'em and seems to me: i they have no immediate plans whatever to leave, or do I miss something? ii the south will therefore have to stick to any agreement, however painful and for all its economic clout the eu is not going to get involved fighting for either lot, viz the srebrenica massacre when their soldiers stood and watched despite what many claim the eu is not a nation state, and maybe never will be could christofias ever sign up to a deal that accepts the turkish army stay?!? highly unlikely though that sounds it is worth noting that right-wing conservatives like begin, de gaulle and spinola actually signed away sinai, algeria and portugal's empire in return for peace, and to quote the spice girls, the north is going to have to "give", as long as it's not "giving in" so if the above leaders could do it and the provos join the peace process it is all very possible... perhaps the common link is that reality was beyond a military solution not that the sides would like each other any more than they do at the moment, there are said to be more "peace walls" than ever in northern island... andre

Small point but the soldiers at Srebrenica were actually Dutch UN soldiers and not as Andre stated eu soldiers.

hello ray, thanks for clarification, yes of course you are right! the fact remains that the eu for all its diverse purchasing power and its selective largesse eg 1.3billion sterling recently handed to bulgaria that can now not be "properly acounted for" etc etc etc: does not posess marx's well-known signifer of a state ie "a body of armed men" (sic) that is why sarky and angey feel the need to cobble together a european army, tho' I will believe it when I see it notably, it has proved totally and shamefully incapable of acting together to lay down the law to "world energy suppliers" (no names, no pack drill!) does that mean I am whiningly anti-eu? not a bit of it firstly britain is too small and too weak to push all the other countries around like it could 150 years ago secondly the trade and social benefits are considerable and thirdly the alternatives could be control from washington or even moscow, bless their little valenki boots... "better the brussels you know" is my line to misquote kylie minogue: after these inflammatory statements I will now look for a bunker to crawl into in cyprus terms tho' the eu will continue to act in strong "support" of it's all-christian members (did I really say that and are they anyway?) viz the so-called "republic of cyprus" hereafter referred to as the "dark side" and so there is strong pressure from europe for a deal/sellout/whatever where it's hand is very limited indeed with turkey is that whatever the gc's say they think, handing over northern cyprus is just not enough to buy turkey an admission ticket to the eu trough I sense that christophias understands that very well so it may indeed fall to papa dop to pump up the national spirit, and then we are back to square one... what gives me a little glimmer of hope is that according to mark's research, the dark side may well be seriously split; and half of gc's are said to accept they cannot go "home" but would willingly accept a financial package, as would a tc mate of mine 84 years old and from limassol, who lost his lands andre
