I don't see why not, laptops, mobiles, MP3 players, cameras are all electrical. As for shoes, if you can wear them on your feet in the cabin I can't see why they can't be in your bag and I have seen people in the past change into a comfy pair for the flight after taking them out of thier bag so I am fairly sure you will be OK. Just remember not to take liquids over, I think 100ml container size but I stand to be corrected on the size. Paul

On a similar subject. We flew Pegasus back to Stanstead and on landing in Istanbul the plane had a puncture. We all had to get off the plane and go into the terminal with all our hand luggage. When the wheel was changed we had to go through the normal Ex Ray machine and all liquids including any booze purchased at Ercan was confiscated . This did not seem fair to me but there is nothing we could do about it. lou

If it helps, we always now buy at the airport 'duty free' - books, mags, toiletries (sun creams) - you still get the special deals at Boots - sweeties, even clothes (and electricals) - it really does save on weight allowance.

On a similar note I have always taken the view that your hold baggage is an oportunity to import stuff that you may find more expensive in the TRNC. So far this year we have imported a Dyson and a 27 inch flat screen. Both of them used items, if you get importing new stuff you may get charged duty.

Hi all, As an airport professional involved in baggage, I see people getting very upset when their hold (checked in) baggage fails to turn up. I never cease to be amazed at what people will put in to their hold baggage, such as, jewellery, essential medicines, house/car keys, travel documents, and even substantial amounts of cash. So as to what to put into carry on baggage? Clothes and footwear sufficient for 24 hours suitable for the climate; Essential medicines (they are exempt from the liquids rule); High value items (so they stay in your sight); Travel size cosmetics (shampoo, tooth paste, sun cream, etc) many chemists including Boots do them; Food items if you have a specific diet; Your car and/or house keys (you may not need them on holiday but you certainly will when you get home); last but not least A BOTTLE OPENER AND CORKCREW you cannot live without them. Keep cash and travel documents on your person. DD

Dermot can I suggest two alterations to your list: I would hesitate to carry the corkscrew just in case they ask you to remove it as it could be misused. With regard to medicines being fluids/pastes larger than 100ml do have a doctors letter with you saying they are prescription. Most are recognised but it's worth the effort and it can be reused if they are a long term need.

Hi again, The corkscrew was a bit of humour. The medicines can also include a small number of syringes for diabetics, but as Tom says a doctor's letter is a good idea. Some jobsworth will always try to take completely harmless materials out of hand luggage. If you are sure of what is permitted (see message 10 from Tom) then stand firm. Try to remember that most countries you are likely to visit like NC (and even France) have things called SHOPS. You do not have to bring the kitchen sink. Make do with cheap shampoo and conditioner for a few days. It won't kill you. Even the most miserly airlines allow about 7kg in hand luggage so any 'emergency' requirements should be able to be accomodated. Just watch out for the cabin bag sizes, some airlines (Ryanair) are catching people out on this and forcing them to pay €/£35 for a bag that does not fit in the sizer. DD

Take it from someone who has been flying at least once/month over the last 12 years and as many times as 6 times/month. The 2 most important things to carry with you on any trip are Passport and major credit card with availble credit. With these 2 items you can always find a way round a travel problem. After that I would agree with dublinderm, priority on visa letters for certain countries, important medicines and so on. My facination has always been with the people who carry medium sized suitcases that are oversized and normally so heavy they struggle to lift them to the overhead compartment. It is obvious the contents aren't all going to be needed on the flight so I can only assume it is people trying to get as much extra baggage over and above the hold baggage limit or in many cases business men who are so pushed for time that they don't want to wait for the hold luggage at the arrival point. It is the airlines fault for allowing it I suppose !! Paul
