for the first time night i tried cod baba, so i goes and orders a take away has a beer at the bar and waits, told its ready pays and takes them home, what a waste of time that was i may have well trown them in the bin on the way home, i had cod which when it was fresh am sure would have been nice but mine had the wiff of amonia ( always a good sign its seen better days) which was incased in a thick burnt pudding like coating which had been fried in very old burnt rancid fat that should have been thrown away along time ago, needless to say i will not be trying it again, and next time will take the time to drive a bit further to either ravine or the one a bit further on

Thats a shame Andrew I have'nt had fish n chips from cod baba for a while but enjoyed it last time ! but had a highly recommended fish n chips at the Ravine recently and despite lots of great reports thought totally average ! think could be luck of draw although shouldnt be the case ! We were looking forward to it cos we met our Cypriot plumber there who had a fish on his plate that resembled a whale and ours more like a minnow not suggesting of course !!! just jealous ha ha good for the diet !!

Will never go there again. My fish was orange inside and had the same smell as Andrew`s. Was told it was because it had been defrosted too quickly. They did not replace it. Ravine, Rivada and I`m told Jessics.

Also went to the Old Mill a couple of months ago and it was to die for. Haven`t been recently and I know they changed the chef, so cannot vouch it wil be the same. However, will got back there.

my only gripe with Cod Baba are the size of the portions of curry sauce and mushy peas.... I realise they are very expensive here in NC why not just make their own instead of using normal 'Brit chip shop curry sauce' for example. I can even give them a recipe for making it.

Andrew, Like Msg 11. Take it back or go and complain in the morning!

Ravine is full of piss heads after a cheap drink and rivarda is a rip off.

As with any bad food, if you do not take it back and complain you have no right to publically criticise. You have not given the owners a right of reply before slagging them off in public. If it was as bad as you imply you could have returned the next day and it would not have improved.

We always eat F&C, on the occasions we can afford it, at Cod Babba and always first quality.

re 17#

so by that same token then you dont say how good things are, you just go along and tell the owners the next day but i do note your comment

'If it was as bad as you imply you could have returned the next day and it would not have improved.'

there are a few basic things that even a compleate novis can see in the art of fish and chips

1, you know if the fish is off or going off before you even cook it ( the texture changes and its smells)

2, you can see when the oil/fat for the frying needs changing (it smokes, foams, goes black, and leaves a bitter after taste on everything you use it for)

of course i will go in and tell them about it but one thing for sure wont be eating there again

everyone has a choice and thats mine

We have stopped going to fish n chip shops here as they start of well and then go rapidly downhill when they realise they cant sustain the quality and service. We tried flippers when it first opened up and there was a guy who actually ran a fish and chip shop in the UK and it was really good. Then he left and it went downhill quickly. Sam with Cod baba. Now and again we try these places once more thinkng it maybe better but alas its not

I have been using CodBaba since Mike and Carol first opened it - what, 4 years ago, and I think that if anything, the quality of the food improved when Gunes and Fatos took it over. In all that time i have never had a bad meal, but I know that if I did I could tell them and they would be mortified.

I've had some dodgy meals here in the TRNC over the years, sometimes at places that have been highly recommended, but as LaptaMike almost said, anyone can have an off day, so we always leave it a while and then try again. If the second meal is not up to scratch, we never go there again. Simple!

As for Msg 18, I was brought up with the maxim: "If you can't say something good about someone, don't say anything at all". By that same token, I know that Gunes would rather you'd complained to him rather than slag him off to the whole world. "If you liked your meal, tell your friends; if you didn't, tell the owner."

I'll be interested to see if you have the nerve to go back and complain in person

The above message sums up peoples mentality, there are alot of reasons why people DO NOt complain at the time so get a life and smell the coffee.

I made a complaint about poor service, poor customer relations and was then robbed last week and some of the 'do gooders' brigade actually tried to reason excuses!!

But I also received 43 emails expressing support sand that they have complained in the past and been shouted down or abused at various other establishments.

There are a lot of great places to go and to them I feel we owe them gratitude but others do not deserve it.

The general gist I got from my complaint last week was that standards are slipping where Brits go as regulars and people are begining to feel they are starting to be used. Yes there are a lot more other places, so I totally agree with NAMING AND SHAMING as it can only clean up standards of service and honesty!!

Never had a bad meal in Cod Baba, i don't eat fish, but the battered sausages and savaloys were always good. Haven't been there for a long while now. When flipperes first opened it wasn't nice at all, chips were under cooked. But now, it's like a proper chippy, the only thing is they take a while cooking it, but that's cos it's all fresh. Bigger savaloys and battered sausges than cod baba. And it's a lot closer being in catalkoy. And if your in the lapta area, it has to be Jessics bar, i dont eat fish but anyone i have been with has ordered fish and chips with peas, apparently better than any UK chippy! Couldn't even finish it, so much food! and it's normal prices. I have eaten sweet and sour chicken balls, chicken balls!! Just like the UK, not on the menu but you just have to ask.

My daughter and her family ate at Codbaba last evenig, they said the food was lovely.

It just goes to show, anyone can have a bad day, perhaps you should have told the owner Andrew,

maybe then, he'd have had a chance to put it right for you.

I did complain about the fish being orange. They took it away and brought it back and said there was nothing wrong with it, it had just been defrosted too quickly!!!!!! They were not that busy that night either.

can't beat flippers in Çatalköy in my opinion. Had Cod Baba and Ravine but Flippers is much better value at 11tl and very fresh white fish not the 'grey' kind i've had elsewhere.

ang1706. Message 21. The complaint you made last week was fully justified in my opinion because we received the same service and reception as you did.

There seem to be conflicting ideas on this subject, I agree that you should complain to the management but not necessarily drive back there to do it but then again what choice do you have if you can't get hold of them.

Then again, if it weren't for the forum we would not know anything about the problem for andrew and would quite happily go along with things until we have a bad meal ourselves. For all we know, and please note I am not mentioning any particular venue, there could be 20 people a week complaining to the management and getting promises of we will rectify it. At least this way everybody is getting an idea that some have never had an issue at this venue and so it is likely to me that this was a one off but how would we know that without the forum.

I have had a couple of poor meals from a couple of places and I shy away from them but if I did happen to try them again and it had not improved I would mention it here also.

The only one I've found here better than Jessics is over the border at Dhikelia, long drive though.

Eaten fish 'n chips at Ravine and Cod Baba, nothing much wrong except pea portions at CB. Had takeaway from Rivada. The only one I wouldn't go to again is Rivada, but as anyone knows, consistently good fish 'n chips takes some doing. Even Harry Ramsdens aren't perfect every time.

I was in the Codbaba last night with friends and it was delicious as usual. The restaurant was full and I didn't see anybody complaining.
