there appears to be lots of Brits packing up and heading back to the UK - 3 in my street.

Why (we just arrived - what are they not telling us)

Thousands of reasons for this - could just be coincidence or could be you (joke please don't take offence) - financial things drive most people away as the interest drops on savings and the pot of gold slowly turns to the puddle of lead. Grand children and family seems to be the next big thing on the list, closley followed by old age/ill health and free NHS in the UK against pay or you die system in the TRNC.

Don't let it worry you, if you have done your homework, been here before and made sure the life is for you then just learn to live over the next three years and you will be at a point where you love it and never leave or hate it and can't wait to go.

We love it, never going back, have not even left the Island in the past three years and have no real need to even go South - everything we want is here. Good luck out there and enjoy life, don't live a worried life.

lot's of people are discontent and come to Cyprus because they believe it will change them, unfortunately they bring their discontent with them. I loved the UK but I prefer north Cyprus. As for all the problems that happen here, quite different ones happen in the UK. But then, the grass is always greener on the other side. The ones who are leaving, when they get to the airport they'll be jumping from one queue to the other because they think it is shorter and if it isn't they'll be miserable wishing they stayed in the original queue. Me, I'll end up chatting to the people in whatever queue I'm in and completely forget how long it takes to get to the desk.

well put waddo

i havent been back to uk since ive been here 4.5 years and have no intention

sometimes people get in the holiday mode when they buy and sadly you have to get out of the holiday mode and on with reality.

I think a lot of people return because of the red tape and lets face it corruption.

still like waddo says after a few years it grabs you and you wont go back.

big changes are in the wind and i can see it benificial to all

If anyone is getting out I wish I knew how, obviously not on a CTA flight.

If lots of folk are packing up and moving out, I wish I knew how too, as they aren't moving with us! Seriously though, there has been an increase, but not dramatic. Most of the people we have moved to Cyprus still say they wake up every morning, look at the view, and think how lucky they are. The ones moving back it's mostly for the reasons already stated - ill health and the NHS, and breakdown of a relationship being a common reason - but that happens everywhere, it's just getting on with the next chapter of life, nothing more sinister than that. I like Malsancak's analogy of the airport queue too!

Were these people renting or are they selling their villas? it could mean many things, lack of funds now interest rates are way down, health reasons, moving to anothe area?... Perhaps knock on doors and ask why they are moving?.....

The reason I returned to the UK after nearly 6 years is because my family who were living in the TRNC moved on for work reasons and I didnt want to be out there on my own, but dont get me wrong I loved the place and I had some very dear friends

i dont want to make any money i just want a better life and if someone from uk rents out there house for say £1500 per month pays £100 per month for the mortgage on that property then banks the profit in trnc it dont take a lot of workin out at 8% where ur better off especialy if u already own the house in trnc where ur gonna live.i think thats nearly £20,000 per year gross

You will only get the right answer from those that are going back. As you can see, all the posts are from people

who are not moving back giving motives to those that have, while at the same time saying how much the love the place.

Hildy is asking why people are moving back to the UK. So answers from people who either say they love the place, or say they do because they cant get out, dont really address the question.

Trouble is I suppose most who have left ,do not contribute now to this forum.

Although I am English I have lived in Italy, US, Kuwait and UAE and visited many more countries for quite long work spells. But this is the place I want to stay I love the people (OK - 1 or 2 exceptions), I love the peace and quiet, the quirkiness and I believe very strongly in their cause.

But for all that I think it helps me that I have been a bit of a nomad. I have often thought that if you leave it until retirement to move abroad there is too much new to absorb at a time in life when change is harder to embrace. And if you have been in one place all your life then so much is taken for granted that you only miss when you have left it behind.

Hi Casper, although you may be £1400 net per month better off, the interest of 8% wont be on the full year balanace remember it's 8% on whatever your balance is at any time. So you'll get £16800 per annum in rental income, less UK tax if you're paying it, and 8% of £16800 is £1344 - total £18144 and that assumes the £16800 is in for 12 months - so don't know where you get £20k from? It would actually be less assuming the £1400 ws credited monthly and not touched. Sorry for rambling on, but you can tell I worked in banking for 30 years can't you.

wouldn't rolling compound interest mean 8% of whatever is in the bank at the end of each month. I only ask because I was under the impression that this was the case, regardless though the 9.5% I am getting is alot better than anything I know about in UK, granted it is in TL but I have no plans to change it back to stirling in the immediate future.
