RE msg 1, peofali98: (...) who says nigerians are scammers? (...) => No, they're not! Recently I got an email from the son of a former Nigerian bank president, who happened to have 30 million US dollars or so and didn't know how to transfer the money to me. We're in close email contact now, because he found out that the 30 million belonged to a Nigerian who was related to my mother's sister. I have to keep this a secret so I cannot give more information here. I have had a thousand of such emails from a thousand Nigerian scammers, but this one is not a scam, because the sender solemnly wrote that we are brothers in Christ. The money can arrive any day. So he says. "Who says nigerians are scammers?" - I do.

These emails don't seem to stop! They are all scams and all nigerians. Sometimes if the story of a president's son or oil money doesn't work there is stories of women in camps who falls in love by email without knowing if the address is for a man or woman!! I can't believe that still people fall for them and believe them! Its a deja vu and bunch of lousy crooks!

I believe the fact that most of the scams are from Nigeria, not all I may add is that the network provider there will not allow traces to be made to the origin of the IP address that the mail came from therefore they can't be caught when you complain about them to the police or equivelant. Deniz1, as clarissa2 has allready said, quite a few of these scams to get answered by people who are willing to send the required funds for the new prince of asamuzundazunda or such to release the funds his father had hidden away in a secret bank. The most unfortunate thing is that anyone is gullible and desperate enough to believe that this windfall is the saviour of them becoming destitute can never afford to loose the money they send and get conned. No offence DC, but I read a novel which included a great deal about the Nigerian gangs who carried out this operation when it was at it's worst and it turned out they mostly operated out of Amsterdam and believed to be run by Dutchmen, not proved.

As I have said before donty we cannot trust a word you say because you cannot be honest about who you are, so to me and moany others, automatically everything you say is a lie or rubbish!!!! As for Nigeria, yes a minority have set the country up to be abused. Fortunatley the government brought in the 419 legislation (that is the number of the directive) to try to stop the scammers. This has driven many of them to neighbouring West African countries. How can people still be getting conned is what I want to know, there has been so much publicity over thae yeasr about these scams and how they work. The fun is the games set up to scam the scammers and many have worked. Interested then check out the sites associated with the scams, I have posted 3 below but there are many more, enjoy! http://www.419baiter.com/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance-fee_fraud http://www.419eater.com/

(...) => Absolutely true. They operate from Amsterdam-Bijlmer (kind of a large suburb), where the population mainly exists of "new Dutchmen" (as the "old Dutchmen" are now required to call them). However, I've not read yet that these Nigerian gangs are managed by Dutchmen - which of course doesn't mean you are wrong. |

DC, there was no evidence from the author in his book that there were any dutchmen involved apart from overhearing the Nigerian con artists he went under cover to meet talking in Dutch over the phone, too he believed the boss, whenever he explained the difficulties raising the additional cash they required from him. This was as he put it the only thing that pointed to possible Dutch involvement however he pointed out that he would be very surprised if any one would be silly enough to operate out of his/her own country. racoonchic, if by racism you mean it is most specifically about the Nigerian race then I suppose it is racist but only in an accurate statement about the race of the main scam over e-mail system contributors. In the sense of racism, as in bigotry, then no it isn't.

Chris, you should know better than that. It is not a shirt, it is my overalls for working offshore and I have the choice of orange or blue, company standard colours for offshore. Which would you think I prefer? I have requested Green, white and gold but for some reason they told me to stop being silly, I think they may be closet orangemen. Glad to see you back darlin, hope you recover quickly and 120% better than before. Paul

Well i am a Nigerian and i confident enough to say i an not a scammer and never will be one nor a fan of a scammer. The question is that are Nigerians scammers?.... Well the truth is that there are people that are into scam in Nigeria as well as people that are not and will never support the idea which i can proudly say i am one who feels terrible hearing stories of people being scammed worldwide. It hurts when people stereotype about where you are from, calling Nigerians scammers, please do take note that not all Nigerians are scammers. Personally i feel bad as a Nigerian when people talk about this scams by people from Nigeria, but not as an individual. As an individual it only get to tarnish the image of Nigerians in general which one way or the other it is affecting the people who does not support the scammers. I hope people can stop stereotyping in general and see it that its not possible that all Nigerians are scammers... For the scammers ..God will punish you all severely AMEN

My friend (white) attends a Nigerian church in the East End of London - they do the most amazing work for the homeless and for people with alcohol problems. We never hear about the good stuff do we - just the bad unfortunately.

| msg # 31 you are absolutely correct in saying, that no one ever gets to hear the good stuff. Whilst in the restaurant trade, a rule of thumb is....if you give bad service to one person...that person will tell approximately 10 people, who will go on to tell another 5 people...etc etc....but, if a whole restaurant has a fantastic meal and superb service, they 'might' tell a friend or 2.....so by a law of averages...bad news really does go a lot further than good news... I have lived in Africa, and i know by experience that the majority of these people have good hearts, and i would never judge them as a nation, however....the fact that these scams have been mostly perpetuated in, and from, Nigeria, does not bode well for these people, which is an absolute shame, as i have only known good honest people from there! ps...this does not mean i am an easy target (for ANY nationality) to harvest my email address and send out spam emails!! | Of course they are not scammers. i got a lovely email from a Nigerian Prince the other day. His poor family have been wiped out and he has £25,000,000 dollars in a secret bank that he can't get access to because his deceased Father never left anyone know the account number. He said If I send him £5,000 and give him my bank details he will split the money with me. How kind is that? I feel really sorry for him. |

It is inaccurate to say that Nigerians are scammers, even though statistically, it may well be true that more scams originate from Nigeria than from any other single country. You might as well say that all Welsh are Sheep shaggers - it's just not true, even though statistically.....

Thanks Keith, I am rather surprised at some of the statistics about the scams and the fact that the nickname for this type of scam is the Nigerian letter scam does tend to lead you in the wrong direction. The second link, not so surprising, I am after all from Aberdeen
