Hi everyone, I am sorry to say, there will be no more Sunday GOLDEN OLDIES show from ADA Fm. As all the regular listeners to the show know, I have been presenting it now for very nearly 2 years. Over that 2 years I have had many problems, (as have all the other presenters), with equipment failure in the studio on a regular basis, computer crashes, terrible or no transmission signals from the radio mast etc. I and the other presenters have managed to get round (and put up with these problems) even though it has caused us a lot of frustration on many occasions. A new radio manager was brought in recently to bring the station up to date. The station now broadcasts 95% piped dance music from the last 10 years. Rap - Reggae - Hip Hop etc. He now only wants this piped music on weekends with no live DJ's. His excuse is that there is no one there at the studio to oversee if problems arise. Hey folks, I've been doing it for nearly 2 years un-supervised and managed superbly depite the problems.

Continued He said I can do a midweek slot (probably Moday) but I haven't got the time mid-week, so it's sad to say that there'll be no more GOLDEN OLDIES shows. I have to state though that I, and the other UK presenters, do the job voluntarily and without payment and I personally preferred to do the show at a time that was convenient to me. Despite all the problems I have enjoyed my time at AFA Fm and am sorry to be leaving, but the new manager has left me with no other option. My other radio show at Bayrak International continues though, as usual, every Sunday morning at 10am. It's called the JUKEBOX SHOW and goes out for one hour on both the 87.8 and 105 fm frequencies. I play music from all decades from the 1930's to the modern day and all genres of music, but none of the modern Rap - Hip Hop etc. It is a pre-recorded show and I will play requests with messages if you contact me on:- jukebox.show@yahoo.co.uk Hope you can tune in DJ MIKE

I occasionally dip into BRT International and the music played is garbage and all the same. I do not think it is just "the age thing" and I am sure the majority of listeners would be of a certain age and above. Shame that Tom Roache is correct in his column, last week I think, about BRT. May be the managers should get out and about and seek the views of listneers before they loose ALL listeners from ADA and BRT and the associated advertising revenue. I listen to BBC Radio 2 but would go to BRT on a regular basis if there was suitable music to listen to, other than the occasional one as above.

Mike as an epat puts out his juke box show every Sunday morning at 10am. On Saturday I put out a soul show at 10am. Both of us are not paid, and we record the shows earlier in the week. We both believe (if anyone can tell us otherwise) that we play music that appeals to the expat community in TRNC. If that's not the case, then we're wasting our time.... Tom Roache obviously either doesn't listen to our shows or thinks that they are crap. Maybe it's time for us to pack it in. Comments please..... Max...

Thanks for the compliments all you who posted messages. At the end of the day, whether you think a programme or the music played is crap, is all a personal preference. It all depends on the music you were brought up with. The older age groups prefer older music whilst the younger ones prefer modern music. Nothing wrong with that. That been the same for over a 100 years. If you think a programme isn't for you then you have the choice of listening in to it or turning it off. Radio is about variety. Variety of music shows, chat shows, sports programmes etc. The problem at ADA FM is that the new radio manager doesn't want variety. He only wants 24/7 music (piped music which includes mainly hip hop - reggae and rap) of his own choice. That is not good for the general listeners or the station itself. As Max says (in message 6) we believe we are playing music for the expat community.

Continued - Not only that, I know from what I have been told at Radio Bayrak that I have a large number of the local Turkish Cypriot listeners to my JUKEBOX SHOW. That is good. I like to think that I play a good balanced selection of music on my show for all ages and all communities. Not everyone likes my show and some people have told me that. Nothing wrong with that. As I said, everybody has their own preference and personal taste in music and I respect that. I don't particularly like Hip Hop and modern Reggae but it has it's place on the radio and if I don't like the show then I turn it off. I certainly wouldn't say it shouldn't be on the radio because there are people who do like that genre of music and they have a right to listen to it. Just like my generation who like the older music from the 50's - 60's and 70's. Radio is for everybody - old and young alike - not like ADA FM. VARIETY is the spice of life. Give the radio a chance to appeal to ALL. DJ MIKE

I'll miss the show on ADA so it's Bayrak for me in the future. It's a shame the new manager seems to have tunnel vision and doesn't want his job to be for the purpose of entertaining the public any more!! I always thought that was what radio was all about.
