First things first. What computer are you connecting it too? (Make model etc)

Does the computer have USB ports?

How far have you got with connecting it?

The more info you can give me the easier it will be to sort this one out.

Hi Cruggs

Have you tried a different USB cable. I had a similar problem with a brand new hard drive and it turned out to be the supplied cable was not working.

When you say scanner works, is that scanning as in copy or can you save scanned doc to computer?

PS. Avoid downloading software in msg 4 until we move forward. This could only make matters worse.

This is going to take a while as we have to eliminate all possible causes.

Have you had any other device working in the USB ports before?

If Yes, did they work?

OK.

Well we can now establish that the printer and cable are not at fault. So definately the USB on the PC. This is because your system is older and has USB 1.1 and the new items work on USB 2.0. When purchasing new USB devices when using an old system it is worth looking to see if they are USB1.1 compatable. My guess is that the printer and webcam is not backwards compatable.

All is not lost because you can purchase an add-on card that will give you USB2.0 ports. You can get these from PC world (if in UK). Not difficult to fit in if you want to do it yourself. If you are going to do it, I can give you instructions on how to do this.

Hope this all helps.

On some machines, when you have 4ports together and two on the back or somewhere else (which I presume you have) the top two will be USB 1.1 and the bottom two USB 2.0.

As per,

Just to pick up on MSG 11

Yes, this can be correct on newer machines but looking back at the age of this PC and the fact that he had tried it in all USB ports. It was obvious that it was a compatablity issue.

Good to know I am not the only one in NC who can help. Thanks to all.
