Advice please.... I am due to move to Cyprus in August but need to set up an email address and add contacts before we leave UK. I know that a hotmail address can be accessed anywhere but is this recommended??

Your uk email address will probably work for a while after you stop paying for it, and you can usually set it to forward mail automatically to your new one, which help if you have forgotten anyone.

Hotmail? up to you, but not recommended. Perhaps you could try gmail (googlemail) which seems popular.

Not sure why anyone would give a negative response re Hotmail.. unless it's the often popular anti-anything-Microsoft reason..

If you have a pay-for-it email service I would say, why? What 'service' are they providing that you can't get for free?

Hotmail and GoogleMail are free and both provide excellent services for free... why would you choose anything else?

Export your contacts and import them into the one you choose and do it all before you move. Then when you are here it will all work seamlessly.

I have had a hotmail address for I think 13 years and have had no problem with it. People have had issues but I believe it is something they did themselves like letting a social networking site look for your contacts. If you don't do that, I think it is very safe.

Your TRNC ISP will allocate you an e-mail address, i.e. vaughan@sunnycyprus.net . I didn't ask for it, I was given it when I took out my contract. It is free (included in your monthly subscription).

"It is free (included in your monthly subscription)"

So not really free then...

I like the idea of my email account being in the hands of a system that is bullet-proof with proper resilience built in... I'm not sure if any/many of the ISP's on the island have the same sort of contingency built in when servers go down.

You don't have to use it and it is "free" in as much as if you say you don't want it, you don't get a reduced subscription.

That is what I should have made clear from the outset. We are moving permanently so we will be cancelling our subscription with Virgin(Ntl) so will be looking for a new ISP and new email. So if anyone can advise what is best to do. Also regarding a "dongle" I have one from Virgin so can that be unlocked to use or do I need to buy one out there?
