| Alan Rough the Art of Goalkeeping The bubble-permed Rough had been suspect when Scotland crashed 3-1 to Peru in the 1978 World Cup. Four years later in Spain, his hair was straight but he was still suffering brushes with disaster. After going 1-0 up against Brazil, Scotland conceded a free-kick on the edge of the area. Rough, bizarrely, stood behind the middle of his wall. He’d still not moved by the time Zico’s effort crashed into the net. “They had four people running towards the ball,” said Rough. “I was looking at the wrong one.” |

| As Keith has nominated every Scot ever born I nominate Percy Shaw as surpassing anything invented by anyone of any nationality. We all of course know he was an Englishman who invented Cats Eyes to aid night driving. Imagine the number of drink driving Scots who over the years would never have driven home safely had it not been for this Englishman. However, the real magnitude of his invention, can only be fully appreciated, when you consider, that he took his inspiration from seeing a domestic cat, at night, on a road. Had the cat been facing the other way around he would of invented a rotary pencil sharpener too ! Try and Scotch that then ! |
