Rust coloured stains have developed along the bottom (sides and walls) of my pool. Despite Chlorine 'shocking' the pool, adding algicide (with brightener) and acid, nothing seems to touch it. Any ideas as to how and what will remove this, or what may be causing it? Thanks

To what level of Free Chlorine (FC) are you shocking?

You may have mustard algae and you need to be shocking to 40% of your cyanuric acid level. i.e if you have a CY level of 50ppm (optimum) you need to be shocking to 20ppm chlorine.

Iron stains appear as a brown or rust coloured discolouration however it is important to ensure that your stain is correctly identified so the correct treatment can be used.

Thanks TRNC and Pools. I have shocked to the correct levels and having just read a few articles on the web, I think they are Iron stains. I just need to know now what I use for that?!

Laptalogical

It is possible --and I emphasise POSSIBLE that , during the hunting season some lead shot has fallen into your pool. Being lead based , the vacuum will not pick these tiny pellets up . If you have then added chlorine , the chlorine will attach itself to the lead and give off a dark brown stain. Once contaminated by the chlorine , the lead /stain attaches itself to the tiles and is almost impossible to remove . Eventually , as erosion takes place , the stain will minimise and then disappear

We got literally hundreds of lead pellets in our pool during the hunting season..

The did vacuum up into the trap and I removed them... but they did not stain anything.

Have you had any metal work done around the house.

When our terrace railings were put up, I turned my back for 5 mins, man with grinder grinder throwing sparks inot the pool!! few days later rusty spots, had to scrub with scourer to remove.

Or, are the stains by the grout?

Is it the re-bar too close to the concrete surface below the tiles now rusting and the colour coming through the grout?

Neither of these are likely, but considering all options.

If it is mustard algae it will brush off, if it is iron staining it will need an abrasive scourer (green nylon pan scrubber?).

You have black algae, by the sound of it.

This requires scrubbing with a stainless steel brush and possibly treatment with algaecide as well as a chlorine shocking.

Hi

The pool people are coming tomorrow. I think it is Iron stains but as I understand it, it is from the water that I've had delivered? It has been scrubbed with a scourer but still not coming off (stubborn stains)! Will see what the pool people say tomorrow! Thanks for all your help/suggestions.
