If you have twenty pound notes with Adam Smith on them that's fine, but if they show Elgar, that could be bad.

The Bank of England has withdrawn £20 Elgar notes effective 30th June, and they will no longer be accepted in shops - UK building societies and banks will probably take them for a few more months.

From July 1 only notes with the image of Adam Smith will be legal tender.

Regardless of your opinions about Scottish economists, should you have sterling lurking in a tin at the back of the wardrobe, or perhaps take it as payment here in the TRNC, check and send any older notes (featuring the composer of Land of Hope & Glory) back to Blighty asap, before it gets really hard to spend them.

The man in the exchange place in Alsancak told us that he'd been passed quite a few dodgy £20 notes recently.
