Last night we were sitting outside chatting to our neighbours and we saw a great ball of fire in the sky. We watched it for about five minutes and then it seemed to drop from the sky. I should add that we hadn't been drinking (only Turkish coffee). I just wondered if anyone else saw it and what it was. Perhaps it was a meteorite but I thought they fell quickly and this didn't. It just seemed to hover and then drop.

Might it have been a chinese lantern? They burn in a spectacular fashion and travel some way, then the remainder of the tissue on thin wire and the wax holder just drop.

Lilli It was about 11.15pm over Girne. Vidal I don't think it could have been a Chinese lantern as we watched it for about 5 minutes or so. Surely someone else must have seen it or are you all tucked up in bed by 11.15?

Karanfil. We had the St George Chinese Lanters over our village here in the UK on the England world cup weekend, they do hover for about 10 minutes before they start to drop, we thought we were seeing things because we had been drinking but got the binoculars out just to check.

Woodspeckie Thanks for that info. I didn't think Chinese lanterns would last that long. My apologies to Vidal ... you were probably right!

funny you should say that, at about 10.30 I say a flickering light on my ceiling, I then got up and looked out the bedroom window and the empty house next door was flickering and I thought it was that thing from Shayna, but it was not on and there is no other bars or discos my my house so no noise just a flicker.

Just to clear up any confusion, the bright light in the sky was of course my flying saucer, I'm sorry if it inconvenienced or troubled any of you homo sapiens. Many people ask me if there is any intelligent life on Earth, so I reply "yes of course, but I'm only visiting". Have to go, my Cadbury's Smash is nearly ready...........
