Bill - he reckons you're absolutely right and Spain was the better side. He says (God knows, I don't know what he's on about) that Germany weren't 'allowed to play'.

Well, I saw some of it, and they were definitely on the pitch, so they were obviously allowed to play

You have to really feel for Germany after they weren't given that penalty. It must be really hard for a team when they're cheated by the referee like that.

I wanted Germany to win but it was obvious from the start that Spain were going to defend from the German penalty box. Don't know about the penalty, at this stage you get what you earn. Hope Spain get the cup to go with the other they won two years ago. Can't see Holland staying with them but if they play the way they can, and forget the playacting, could be a classic.

The Germans did not make much of a penalty claim and Joachim Loew has not even mentioned it.

Seems to me that the Germans believed the hype of their counter attacking flair and rather than play the length of the pitch were content to defend their penalty area en masse. Unfortunately for them as they were not brave or good enough to compete mid field, as Denisen says, the Spanish took them on and snuffed out most of their possession before the Germans could cross the halfway line. Not sure whether or not the "no penalty given incident" was in or out of the box but after several replays formed the view that the referee saw the German player "trail his leg" and widen his gait to deliberately ensure slight contact then dropped like a bag of wet cement. For me the best part of the world Cup to date, and to enhance it's popularity in years to come, is that we have two teams, who undoubtedly have at times over the years been the best in the world, in a final for the first time. And..... may the best team win on Sunday next !

You came to the same conclusion as me... desperate for a penalty the Pig-keeper deliberately went down. It's called 'simulation' and if the ref thought that's what it was he should have been booked. They didn't make that strong an appeal so I'm guessing they knew they'd been rumbled.

Here is an odd question...

Is this the first time that two monarchies have appeared in a world cup (football) final?

I cannot think of any previous.

It will make a good quiz question in years to come.
