I was wondering whether anyone knows of any guides for mountain walks. I have a friend visiting my villa in Karsiyaka who would be very interested in doing some mountain walks and a guide of some sort would be ideal.

Hi twaddle,

I hope your friend is coming after October, as it is far to hot to go walking in the mountains in the summer months. There is a group who meet nr Kucuk Erenkoy and there are wild orchid walks in the spring.

There's a lovely walk around Besparmak - 5 Finger Mountain. Start at Kyrenia Animal Rescue above Arapkoy. Better still borrow a dog from KAR (maybe one that hasn't been out for a while). It's a circular walk that takes about 2 hours or so - lovely views.

There is a book called Walks in North Cyprus, it has some great walks in it, so why not buy one ready for your friend?

There are two nice walks above where you live which have just been marked up, the first is close to the Kozan Restaurant on the mountain road above Karsiyaka, next to the turn off for the Tank Route. Its marked with concrete post, with white and green flash, it climbs up through the woods and across an open meadow, before dropping into a valley, that as far as we got, after an hour. before we turned round. Great views, it may come out a the old Sina Monastery above Karsiyaka.

The second as I said may be the end of the first route, but if you climb up the track to the Sina Monastery follow the track round the mountain side, you will see the start of the path marked with same signs and stones.

There is a book Walks in North Cyprus, I have seen for sale in the Tower Bookshop in Girne

Libby does guided walks and I hear she is very good at it. She also provides the transport, in fact the whole package. Her mobile No. is 0533 8458279. If you are telephoning from abroad put 0090 in front and drop the 0 in front of the 5. Happy walking.
