After waiting some time to obtain a new Muhtar letter for the fishing licence office, I returned there this week with all of the paperwork needed to receive a licence and to pay my 300tl for 'one year', only to be told that the year started on January 1st 2010 and that another 300tl would be due on the last day of 2010. The fee today is 300tl for 6 months !! as the place was packed with 'workers' all on a fag and coffee break, ( in desperate need of foreigners funds to keep them in work) I withdrew my application, collected my pile of documents and left.

As wrong as it may be,you'll find that ,that rule applies to all.Local or foreighner!!!

Besides, why do you feel the need to mention about being a "foireighner" every time there is something you dont like about TRNC?

ps.above question is general not personal.

They should put the fee for seafishing in coastal waters up to 3000TL, never mind 300, then the environment might stand a chance of recovery of the various ecosystems and various fish species habitats.

Another side benefit would be that tourist divers would have somthing worthwhile to see and photograph.

You can photograph somthing countless times - you can only hook it, or spear it, once!

Yorgozlu, please get your facts right. This is another racist law aimed at getting money from 'ex-pats', locals do NOT have to get a fishing licence.

Tenakoutou, do you really think a few ex-pats fishing responsibly do any harm to this already ruined eco-system ? Instead of appointing yourself as a the local eco police have a look at the litter problem,I'm sure all the plastic waste, water bottles, carrier bags etc. in the sea does many times more damage tha a few anglers.

BigMart:

So if the ecosystem is already ruined, is it not then utterly selfish to want to deliberately exacerbate the situation?

Me 'the local eco police' - how I wish I was.

My priority would be to establish a few marine parks, re-stock them with the appropriate species of marine life, then start a massive clean-up of 'Polythene Island' - sea and shore.

Apologies for that.I started typing before waking up.

However,it is not aimed at ex-pats but to GCs coming over to fish on this side.

People throw plastic waste, water bottles, carrier bags etc from boats far out to sea, which then end up on beaches.

This is far more damaging than stuff left by irresponsible locals and holiday makers.

Big Mart, you may also want to get your facts right, Locals DO NEED to get fishing licences it is just cheaper. (As it is in most Countries)

And I do know this for a FACT as my husband is Cypriot and he has his fishing licence and hunting licence which he gets at the start of each year so as to not to pay the same amount for half a year. As Yorgozlu has said this rule is to stop the GC coming over and fishing. On sunday a group GC were stopped by Police from fishing off the sea wall in Girne, where they were catching dozens of very small fish, and they have been coming every Sunday for weeks.
