The damage has already been done. I have been predicting Turkey's move towards the Middle East and Russia for sometime now. The EU have missed a golden opportunity but Turkey have missed nothing.

Europe's reluctance is a blessing in disguise. I am happy with it. The population of Europe is getting very old and soon they will not afford to pay their pensioners a decent wage.

With the state of Europe at the moment , who in their right mind would be trying too hard to join the EU club?

it was a us concern for generations that turkey may end political co-operation

even though turkey helped found nato and fought in korea

for nearly as long, the usa has tried to persuade the eu to let turkey join in,

which is scarcely its gift anyway

now we are told turkey is pushed into an unholy alliance with the I R Iran

equally it appears that israel finds itself unable to avoid a differently-unholy alliance:

a co-operation agreement with the unrepresentative southern zone of cyprus

cause and effect...or is it?

turkey enjoyed expanding free trade with the eu for yonks and none of that will be sacrificed

neither will its forty billion dollar trade with its bigger partner the russian federation,

whatever lavrov duly intoned last month about no "suffocating timeframes" for a cyprus deal

and for israel it said it found the pocket of a dead suicide bomber stuffed with euros,

but now a small chink opens to the eu via the greek cypriot entity and opportunity knocks..
