Have you thought of buying it in Turkey? More interesting to visit and in TL.

Tom, I have in the past considered a quick pop over to Istanbul and back for a little shopping.

With your experience is this an easy and financially viable task as I have heard from a few people that it is difficult to find somewhere that an language illeterate, english speaking person like myself can deal with the local shop keepers. Also, would there be any customs payments required when returning to Ercan as it might not make it worth while.

I suppose what I am asking is if there is a specific mall or area you would recommend for someone who doesn't speak any Turkish and if the savings could justify the flight prices.

yes we bought one some months ago and like most place in the world you can buy phone with or without contract, which is what we did and then of course it is unlocked. Have used my Telsim card without any problems and have used the phone here and abroad.

Wrong - not all phones can be unlocked. My friend had a Nokia music (red/black colour - can't remember the number) pay as you go from the UK. Nobody here could unlock it. I tried 2 internet unlocking systems together costing £14 but no joy. Eventually someone took it to Turkey where it was unlocked for 120tl. It would have been cheaper to buy it here.

Paul Message 8 - I have taken a break from preparing Sunday dinner as you inspired me - an email is on its way.

The wife will moan! That "you are working again" so I'll probably have to take her shopping!

I bought one in CYTA shop a couple of years ago.

It was unlocked and I have used both UK and TRNC sim card in it without problems.

I discovered later that it was double the price it would have been in UK. Hey-ho!

Tom, I recieved this really excellent e-mail yesterday about potential shopping holidays in Turkey that might help solve the shopping issue with the wife for working on a Sunday, thought you might be interested, no wait. You sent me the e-mail. Thanks very, very much. Lots of information and I really appreciate you taking time out on a sunday to write it all. I will peruse and speak to the wife and let you know if it is a plan she would like to go with.

Thanks again, I thought I would only recieve a short reply but it was much more than that.

Best regards, Paul

John,

re Message 8.

sorry to hear about your friend's experience BUT most phones can be unlocked.

If anyone has any trouble with such, i will introduce them to my source to get such unlocked in Kyrenia.

Regards

John

Most mobiles in the 'south' are unlocked and come via disties in the Middle East.. This type of phone costs more as it isn't subsidised

Compare the prices on here:

http://www.expansys.com/

You can get it delivered to a 'south' address in Limassol - if necessary ;)

I paid 37 euros for a basic unlocked Nokia (with camera) in Public, in the The Mall, in Oct 2008. It does all I want & has never caused me any problems.

If you can get someone to buy for you in UK from carphonewarehouse all their pay as you go are unlocked now. I got a Samsung GT-S5560 touch phone on Vodaphone and put my MTN card in and worked. Since found out carphonewarehouse phones are unlocked.

265 Euros here 99 quid in UK
