The Cyprus Mail is quoting international relations expert, Hubert Faustmann, as saying that Direct Trade with EU for Turkish Cypriots will be imposed on Cyprus by the end of the year. In exchange Greek Cypriots will getting the Ankara Protocol which means it will then have flights and trade with Turkey.

The reason for this, it appears, is President Christofias’ unwillingness to set a timescale for the talks which has given the impression that he does not want a settlement. This attitude reinforces the belief that the south wants to keep Turkish Cypriots out in the cold as a punishment for 1974. Unfortunately for Greek Cypriots this has alienated them from the international community which would like to see a line drawn underneath the Cyprus Problem and for the country to move on.

The Jennifer Lopez witch-hunt hasn’t helped much either. It too reinforces the image of a baying crowd seeking revenge. When people step back and look at what has happened they will s

Looks as though we could be in for a very interesting end to the year; any progress towards resolution of the political issues would be very welcome.

the "unwillingness to set a time frame" and protests against " suffocating timeframes"

are closely related to the fact that the south is not mentally prepared for a compromise

indeed only a couple of months ago 'tof went on south cyprus tv to dismiss any such thing

now it is hardly for me nor even the international community to dictate to them

what their position should be

and as the decades roll by their faith in an "historic reversal" seems to survive,

although some well-wishers believe it is simply a pretence beginning to wear thin

but unless one side is in such an overwhelmingly strong position to dictate terms,

it's gonna be a compromise or nothing I am sad to say

if direct trade is duly imposed,

then, as bett davis once said "hold on to your hats, this is going to be rough ride!"

expect a wailing, a gnashing of teeth and a renting of garments:

far worse than that after the now-famous european court sort-it-out-yourselves

property ruling back in february
