I don't know the legal position but please remember that tortoises are wild animals here and the one you have found was probably never lost - just going about its business. I have had several in the garden here and they will happily accept cucumber or lettuce from you - but they are free roaming creatures so why do you want to keep it captive. Is that any different from the kestrel recently imprisoned at a garden centre that caused so much fuss.

batgirl are you sure your neighbour is the rightfull owner? Its just that our tortoise also went missing a few days ago. We are in the Karpaz area.
