This place makes you pull your hair out at times (not that I've got much left).

Six years ago I imported my old Chrysler, paid all the taxes, arranged the import licence, arranged approval from the antiquaties office, etc. I was told that it wasn't compulsory to register it here as it was an historic vehicle and seeing as I refused to put MUDFLAPS on it, it wouldn't pass an M.O.T. anyway. Also it does not have seat belts, indicators, windscreen washers/wipers, only one rear light, even without these it will pass a U.K. M.O.T. because it's historic.

Now to export it, I have to arrange for an export licence and pay fines for the past 6 years for not registering it here (which in theory, I could not do anyway). I may have covered 100 miles in 6 years, a bloody expensive toy to bring over.

I'm sorry, but I feel that all governmental offices here just want to rip you off.

Pete.

Is there a difference between historic and classic?

I thought that if a vehile was over 25 years old then it was not subject to import/export tax.

p.s. 6ms solution sounds sound.

You still pay import duties even over 25 years old, the only difference is that it is based on it's original selling price when new.

E.G. My car cost $1900 in 1929. There were $6 to £1 then, so they based the import duty on £316 !!!! It did take a while to prove it to them. So they stuck on something like $3000 because it's American.

A 1980 Rolls Royce Corniche was $360,000 when new, just think of the tax on that.

Mark.

Do you have any shipping agents numbers?

I suggest you phone *Hull Blythe [old, established freight forwarders] in Limassol - they shipped our vehicle to NZ.

It was quite a rigmarole, because we had to get the vehicle [Toyota Landcruiser] de-registered in some remote office in Nicosia, even though it was being shipped from Limassol - anything in Cyprus to cause one maximum inconvenience + expense where cars are concerned.

If you imported your Chrysler [I had a 1926 Chrysler in NZ!] through Kyrenia or Famagusta, the Greeks might be difficult. Why not ask * to make enquiries on your behalf? Sorry - I no longer have their telephone number - suggest you 'Google' *them!

Best of luck!

Yorgozlu,

I assumed this forum was to help people, you must have the wrong forum.

I cannot see anything wrong with what has been written.

Why not take the ferry to Turkey on a day trip and just keep going until you reach the channel ferries. You could have a great adventure without the bureaucratic nightmare. If you don't fancy that arrange shipping from Mersin. You only need the old log book to re-register in UK.

When you ENTER the area of CY under 'rump' RoC control buy insurance .. Enter via the SBA - if you are worried about questions - all you have to prove is that the car is LEGAL / safe to drive in the RoC

Arrange shipping with a CY-UK shipping expert @ Limas(s)ol beforehand

Then you can simply arrange to have it shipped back to the UK - arrange UK insurance - and get it re-registered.. As the UK do not officially recognise the 'TRNC' the most important thing will be to show you always owned the car...

I expect you might have questions to ask if you return to the 'TRNC', though ...

Oh dear

I am getting a little worried (for myself & my husband) - having read the e-mails - despite te help & advice offered to Pete.

Reason for my worry - my hubbie & I are planning to drive through Europe into Turkey & then get ferry across to TRNC. The rationale being we will need a car for the 6months we are hoping to stay .

Have been informed we will have to pay import duty/tax but have had difficulty identifying how much & if it is excessive (i.e. equal too or more than we paid for car) then it may not be worth it.

The car is a 1800 Vauxhall Astra SRI & 2002 registration

Help advice would be appreciated

2002 is too old to import the car anyway, unless you have owned the car for a very long time. Had you not realised this or read all the threads about this before?

Pete's issue is totally different. He imported his car as a classic & it is in every sense of the word. Now he wants to re-export it & is having difficulties.

If you intend to return to the UK no problem (unless you've imported a to TRNC car before) Just have 12 month tax and mot on it when you leave the UK

Look up driving to trnc on the search bar or post separately for further help

by the way welcome to the board

sideways,

Its not that they are trying to rip you of, but its more of the fact that they have'nt got the relevant laws and regulations in place.

Its all good of them to enforce laws such as compulsory mudflaps on modern cars etc, but they fail to take into account what they will have to do in different situations, such as if a historic car such as yours, is around.

Because of this, you then pay the consequence, because, in theory, you do owe that money because you didnt pay for it - despite the fact that its their fault that you couldnt avoid NOT registering the car.

Its all a legislative issue.
